Smithfield Herald: Mrs Bedie Watkins, aged 106 years, was burned to death near
Kenly a few days ago. Her great age rendered her helpless and while the members
of the family were out of the room she caught on fire. She was burned almost to
a cinder before discovered. Mrs Watkins was the oldest person in her section,
and probably the oldest in the state. Her age can be proven by authentic record.
