Johnston County, NC - Wood Family Obituaries ¤¤¤¤¤¤ Smithfield Herald Obituaries March 16, 1906 - Whitfield Wood - We have learned that Mr. Whitfield Wood, one of the most prosperous young farmers of the Blackman's X (cross) Roads section met a most shocking death last Saturday. While felling some trees he cut one that lodged against an other. To dislodge this tree he cut another against it which also lodged. While going forward to make a survey of the situation the last tree cut suddenly gave way and fetching Mr. Wood under it, killing him instantly. The deceased was a highly respected young man and his sad death has cast a gloom over the entire community. He leaves a young widow and three small children to mourn his untimely death. --- July 25, 1919 - Thomas Wood - An Aged Man Passes Away - The subject of this sketch, Uncle Tom Wood, departed this life Sunday morning about 3 o'clock, July 13, after an illness of several months. Wood Passes Away - After suffering with spinal and other troubles for three years or more on Thursday night about 8 o'clock, October 27th, Mr. A.B. Wood known as Elic Wood passed to the great unknown. His suffering was unknown tho I saw him several times and he seemed to take it very patiently. Uncle Elic was the son of the late Whitfield and Betsy Wood one of 20 children all of whom are dead except seven, four boys and three girls. He was born and reared in Johnston county, having lived there I suppose all of his life. He was 69 years of age and twice married, first fortyone years ago to Jane Barefoot unto which union were born 8 children, four children and wife having preceded him to the grave several years four children now living. A few years ago he was again married to Mrs. Mary Cook living peaceably together until at the Lord's appointed time He called him from this world of pain and sorrow, we hope to a better world on high. Uncle Elic never united with any church, but was a good man. I have never heard any other than he always lived a moral life good in his home and to his neighbors. His life was a good example for his children and all others.
