Rose Passes 24 June 1930, Meadow Township, Johnston County, NC Prominent Citizen of Meadow Passes John J. Rose, Former Chairman of Board of Education, Dies After Long Illness. Mr. John J. Rose died at his home in Meadow township on Saturday, June 24 at 10 p.m. after an illness of several months duration. He was about 78 years of age and death closed for him a long and useful life. He had been long identified with public life by serving his community as a justice of the peace and a school committeeman and serving the county for eight years as chairman of the board of education. He since young manhood had been a member of the Christian Church at Mill Creek and his support of the church and its institutions had always been very liberal. His life work had been mainly devoted to farming and as a farmer he had been very successful and had created a good estate. He has also held interests in mercantile enterprises in Clinton and Benson. He served as postmaster of the Overshot post office from the time it was first established until discontinued by the rural free deliveries about 1900. Mr. Rose was twice married, first to Miss Julia Rose, who died in 1894 and to this union were born the following children who survive their father: A. M. Rose of Bentonville; J. H. Rose of Benson; I. W. Rose of Rocky Mount; A.W. Rose of Wilmington, Del; John T. Rose of Charlotte; and Mrs. E. G. Blackman of Meadow township. In 1895 he was married to Miss Bethany Johnson of Meadow township and is survived by two children of this marriage: Lee Rose of Meadow township and Dr. Thurman Rose of Rocky Mount. Mr. Rose will be longest remembered as an advocate of temperance and education and by those who know him most intimately as a kind and generous man of the neighborhood. It has been said of him that no person ever called on him when in need without being liberally helped. He was laid to rest in the family cemetery near his home yesterday afternoon. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. O. Henderson, pastor, of the Mill Creek Christian Church. His funeral was largely attended by his relatives, from various parts of the state and by a large number of his friends and neighbors.
