Devised November 11, 1814, Probated February 26, 1817. In the Name of God Amen, I, John Carrell of the County of Johnston in the State of North Carolina, being in a low state of health but of Sound and disposing mind and memory, for which I am truly thankful to the great and wise disposer of all events, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, as follows, to wit, First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Sally Carrell, wife of Mitchell Carrell, Fifty-five dollars in cash. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Lucy Carrell, wife of William Carrell, Fifty-five dollars in cash. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Delilah House, wife of Warren House, one Negro boy named Salisbury, now in their possession to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Susanna Griffeth, wife of Laban Griffeth, one negro girl named Silvy, now in their possession to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Winnefred Johnson, wife of Willie Johnson, one negro boy named Hardy, now in their possession, to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Benjamin Carrell one negro girl Laury, now in his possession, to him and his heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved Son Matthew Carrell Two Hundred Acres of Land lying in said County on the Waters of Middle Creek to be taken off the South side on part of a tract of land I purchased of Jonathan Austin, one negro boy by the name of Frank, one bay filly, my ____ saddle to him and his heirs and assigns forever and also one feather bed, bedstead, and furniture. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved Son Merrill Carrell Two Hundred and Twenty-five acres of Land, being the remaining part of the aforesaid tract purchased of said Jonathan Austin and out of which I have given to my son Matthew Carrell Two Hundred Acres. Two Negro boys named Jo and Abram, to him and his heirs and assigns forever, also one feather bed, bedstead, and furniture. Item, I give unto my beloved Son Ransom Carrell, the land and plantation whereon I now live containing about Three Hundred acres. Also one small tract of land I have lying on Swift Creek on the South side thereof adjoining the lands of Drury Johnson and Starling Johnson, Two negro boys named Bob and Charles, One Feather bed, bedstead, and furniture to him, his heirs and assigns forever, and also one mare colt called his. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Penny Carrell one woman's saddle, one feather bed, bedstead, and furniture, Two negro girls named Tiller and Tamer, to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Aly Carrell one negro woman named Cloe, two negro girls named Rose and Misty, one woman's saddle, one feather bed, bed-stead, and furniture to her and her heirs and assigns forever. Lastly, I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife Aly Carrell all my Stock of Cattle, my two work Stays and Cart, all my stock of sheep, all my ___ hogs, all my fatting hogs, except five head of the best of them which are to be sold, they being first dried into Bacon, Forty barrels of corn her choice, all my fodder including corn shucks, all my plantation tools of every kind, all my geese, turkeys, and fowls, my bay horse and gray filly, my cidar casks, all my household and kitchen furniture, four feather beds, bedsteads, and furniture, and I hereby lend unto my said wife during her widowhood or natural life, the Land and plantation whereas I now live (not withstanding the bequeath of the same to my Son Ransom Carrell) but should she marry, then and in that case she is not to have any further use or hereto of said Land and plantation lent her as aforesaid, I also give to my wife part of a barrel of peach brandy. And it is further my will and desire that all my estate of every kind not heretofore willed away [to] be sold at six months credit and the money arising therefrom (of the above said legacies) to be applied to the payment of the approved legacies, Fifty-five dollars each to Sally Carrell and Lucy Carrell, and beds, bedsteads, and furniture except those given to my wife, and should there be any remaining sum or sums of monies after the payment of all my just debts and settling of my estate, the same is to be applied towards the education of my four youngest children, and it is to be hereby understood that my Tennessee lands which fall to me by the death of my Brother Benjamin Carrell be included in the aforesaid last mentioned sale. And I hereby constitute and appoint my friends Simon Turner and Reuben Sanders Executors of this my last Will and Testament, revoking and making null and void all and any other wills and testaments by me heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this and only this to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said John Carrell have to this my Last Will and Testament set my hand and affixed my Seal this 11th day of November A.D. 1814.
