Of the county of Johnston and State of North Carolina, do make and publish this my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made: And first, I direct that my body be decently interred and that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding to my estate and situation in life: And as to such worldly estate as it has pleased God to intrust me with, I dispose of the same as follows: First, I direct that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possible, out of the first moneys that shall come into the hands of my executors, from any portion of my estate real or personal: (And being weak in body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed be Almighty God for the same.) Secondly, I give, lend, and bequeath to my dear wife for the term of her life or widowhood, the following descriptive property, (to wit) one feather bed, bedstead & furniture; two chests, the one called her’s, & a large new one, six sitting chairs & necessary using Kitchen furniture, consisting of all the iron pot ware generally used in said Kitchen, two kitchen tables, etc. Four cows & calves her choice, twenty head of Hogs, six head of sheep, Four Bee hives, one Horse saddle & bridle, and the necessary farming tools sufficient for one horse, and all the dunghill fowls. Thirdly, I give & bequeath to my youngest son Henry Holt, one side Board, one Buffet, one Clock, one Desk, one Bed, bedstead & furniture, two Chests, one of walnut & the other of pine, two pewter basons, one Still cap & kettle, One negro woman named Quilla and her future increase, also her son Anderson; also her daughter Delier with her increase; also one young negro man named Harry, and one shot gun to him, and to his heirs & assigns forever. Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my beloved son James Holt Four hundred Dollars lawful money of the aforesaid state, to be paid to him to his heirs or assigns by my executors hereafter named. [next page] Fifthly I give and bequeath to my beloved son John Holt one Bed, bedstead & furniture, one chest, one clock, one Negro boy name Jerry, three bee Hives, two head of cattle, one sow & pigs, one Watch, one Secretary, and two pewter basons, to him and to his heirs and assigns forever. Sixthly, I give & bequeath to my beloved Daughter Sarah Strickland, on Bed, bed stead & furniture, one Bureau, one chest, two chairs, one table, three pewter basons, One negro girl, named (Tamar) also one named (Aneca) and their future increase and three head of cattle to her and to her heirs and assigns forever. This property given to my daughter is already delivered. Seventhly, Also, I give & bequeath to my beloved son Joseph Holt, one Bed, bed stead & furniture, one negro woman named (Phillis,) one negro girl named (Eliza) and their future increase, also, one negro boy named (Mathew,) and one large blue chest, one walnut folding table, three bee hives, one shot gun, four stool chairs, One certain Horse commonly called (Sam) two head of cattle, five head of hogs, and Two hundred & fifty dollars in money, to him, to his heirs and assigns forever. The money to be paid by my executors so soon as practicable after my decease. Eighthly, I give and bequeath to my beloved son Wilie Holt, one negro woman named (Cherry) also One negro girl named (Hannah) with their future increase, to him, to his heirs and assigns forever. Ninthly, I also give and bequeath, unto each of the children of my deceased son Jesse Holt one dollar; except the child named Etheldred to whom I leave seventy five dollars, to be paid by my Executors. [next page] Tenthly, I request & desire, that immediately after my decease, so soon as my Executors hereafter find it practicable; all my Books of every description (except those in which names have already been inserted, which names will distinguish the claimant) be divided equally share and share alike amongst my four sons, viz. Wilie, John, Joseph and Henry, together with all the Mechanical Tools which may be found in my Barns (except one chest & its contents standing outside the barns, which I give to my son Henry alone, to them and to their heirs, and assigns forever. Eleventh and lastly, As to all the rest and residue and remainder of my personal estate, goods & chattels of what kind & nature soever I direct to be sold at publick sale, on a credit of not less than six months; also All the Notes, moneys, and accounts of every description whatsoever, when properly adjusted by my executors, and so soon as it may come into their hands, they shall make an equal distribution amongst five of my children, viz. Wilie, John, Sarah, Joseph and Henry. And I hereby make and ordain my beloved sons Wilie & John Holt Executors of this my last will and testament: In witness whereof I Etheldred Holt, the testator, have to this my will written on two sheets of common paper on the 3rd page of the second sheet, set my hand and seal, the twenty second day of June, One Thousand eight hundred and Forty Seven. Be it known unto all Men by These Presents, That I Etheldred Holt, Senr. of the county of Johnston, and State of North Carolina (as aforesaid) have made and declared that my last will and testament in writing, bearing date the twenty second day of June, One Thousand eight hundred and Forty seven. I the said Etheldred Holt, do by these presents contained in this codicil, confirm and ratify my said last will, and out of Item number seventhly I take there from the Negro girl Named Eliza with her future increase, also the two hundred and fifty dollars, which is part of the property that I gave to my son Joseph Holt, the said negro girl & the s@. [said] money I now make null & void in s@. [said] Article. And my will and meaning is that this Codicil or schedule be esteemed and adjudged to be Part or Parcel of my said Will and Testament, and that all things therein contained and mentioned, be faithfully performed, in as full and ample manner, in every respect, as if the same were so declared, and set down in my said Will. In witness whereof, I the said Etheldred Holt, have hereunto set my hand and seal, the day and year above written.
