Devised January 6, 1828, Probated February 25, 1828. [Note: The original will has "February Term, 1829" written as the probate date. However, Court Minutes and Estate Records indicate that the will was probated on February 25, 1828]. In the Name of God Amen, I John Stephenson of the county of Johnston and State of North Carolina being weak and low in health of body but of sound mind and perfect sense and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner as following to wit, Imprimis, I wish all my Just debts to be paid. Item, I give to my well beloved son Allen Stephenson all my land on the east side of my mill branch. Item, I give to my well beloved son Allen Stephenson one cow and calf. Item, I give to my well beloved son Allen Stephenson one filly Bridle and Saddle. Item, I give to my Beloved son Allen Stephenson one Loose coat, the other wearing clothes to be divided amongst my sons Amos and Allen Stephenson. Item, I give to my well beloved wife Sarah Stephenson one cow and calf, one sow and pigs, and three Boar shoats, one feather bed and furniture in full during her widowhood or Lifetime. Item, I give to my well beloved wife Sarah Stephenson one pot and one oven and frying pan and half the geese in full, and one tea kettle, one wheel and cards, one pair. Item, I give to my well beloved wife Sarah Stephenson the knives and forks, three forks, three plates, one dish, two basons, all the earthen ware during her lifetime and widowhood. Item, I give to my well beloved wife Sarah Stephenson one more bridle and saddle during her lifetime, one chest in ___, one trunk. Item, I give to my well beloved son Allen Stephenson a feather bed and furniture. Item. I give to my well beloved wife Sarah Stephenson all the sitting chairs. Item, I give to my well beloved son Allen Stephenson one chest. Item, I give to my well beloved wife Sarah Stephenson a negro woman by the name of Hannah during her widowhood or Lifetime, one plow frame, and two cutters. Item, I give to my well beloved son Allen Stephenson one pot and dutch oven. Item, I give to my well beloved daughter Lucy Lassiter and my son Amos Stephenson and son Allen a negro woman by the name of Hannah and her increase at my wife Sarah Stephenson's Death to be equally divided amongst them. Item, I give to my well beloved Mary Ogburn a negro woman by the name of Huzzy and old ___? Item, I give unto my well beloved daughter Lucy Lassiter one bass skillet. Item, I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Sarah Coats the first child that Huzzy brings and my daughter Mary Ogburn is to keep said two years and then give it to Sarah Coats. Item, I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Edith Johnson a negro boy by the name of Washington. Item, I give to my well beloved daughter Sarah Coats two dollars current money. Item, I give to my well beloved wife Sarah Stephenson five hundred weight of pork, five barrels of corn and one loom and gear. Item, I give to my beloved son Amos Stephenson one black smith's shop and my son Allen Stephenson is to do his work in the Shop his lifetime and no right to sell his part. Item, I give to my well beloved daughter Charlotte Avera one still, One yoke of oxens, ten head of cattle, one horse, five sows and 78 pigs to sell to pay debts and a negro man by the name of Ned aged about 25 years. Item, I give to my well beloved daughter[s] Lucy Lassiter and Sarah Coats all the property that I give to my wife Sarah Stephenson at her death to be equally divided. Also I give unto my son Henry Stephenson two dollars current money. Declaring this and this only to be my will. Page 36, February 25, 1828, A paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of John Stevenson being offered for probate William Coats for himself and his wife Sarah came into court and entered a caveat against the probate thereof whereupon it was ordered by the court that an issue be made to try whether the said paper writing is or is not the Last Will and Testament of said John Stevenson.
