STATE vs KITT HUFFMAN IN JONES COUNTY COURT

State of North Carolina, Lenoir County 
Be it remembered that on the 20th day of July 1854 personally were present 
before me Wm. Fields Shff by Richard Noble, Dep. Shff, Kit Hufman and John M. 
Davis who acknowledged themselves held and firmly bound to the State of North 
Carolina in the following sums, to wit: The said Kit Hufman in the sum of One 
Hundred Dollars and the said John M. Davis in the sum of one Hundred Dollars 
each, to be levied out of their respective Good and Chattels Lands and 
Tenements.

The condition of the above Recognizance is such That if the above bounden Kit 
Hufman shall make His personal appearance before the next County Court to be 
held for the county of Jones at the Court House in Trenton on the last Monday 
in July next, then and there to answer the State of a pleas of Carrying a gun 
against the statute in such cases made & provided and against the peace & 
dignity of the State and not depart the same without leave had and obtained 
then the above Recognizance to be void; otherwise to remain in full force and 
virtue.

State of North Carolina, Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Jones County, 
January Term AD 1854

The Jurors for the State upon their oaths present that Kit Huffman a free 
person of color at and in the County of Jones on the 1st day of June AD 1853 
and on divers their days and times as well as heretofore after to the taking 
of this inquisitions, a shot run in his house in said County situate 
unlawfully did keep without having obtained from the Court of Please & Quarter 
Sessions of said County with in one year next preceeding that keeping in his 
said house the said shotgun a licinse therefore contrary to the form of the 
statute in such case & made and provided and against the peace and dignity of 
this State.

Kinston July 30th 1854  Dear Sir I must make some apology for not Returning 
the within papers in time I had Left Home with my family and my Wife Was taken 
sick on Saturday & I could not get Home in time to put them in the office I 
made my calculation to of got Home in time to of sent them by John F. Wooten 
but I could not Got home in time I presume Hufman & John M. Davis Was both Was 
both there as Davis was Hufmans security for his afearence of the matter has 
not Been tried Send me another caficas & I will have him there next Court
