Colgrove, of Jones County, was on his way from his home, a little out of town, to Trenton, yesterday morning about 8 1/2 o'clock, he was shot and killed by a band of men, whose names we are as yet unable to ascertain. At the time the deed was done, he was at or near the path which leads to Bragg's house. A colored man who accompanied him was also shot through his arm and side. He is sadly hurt, but with the best care may possibly recover. Mr. Colgrove's horse was also shot, about twelve buck shot entering his head. Shortly after this affair occurred, his brother, Senator D.C. Colgrove, dispatched a messenger to this city with the above facts, and requesting that a hearse and coffin be immediately sent for his body. Jno. L. Shipp, who has been acting (missing text) also sent a note by the same messenger, stating substantially the same as related above. Comments on the above facts are unnecessary. It is a terrible state of affairs, and the only question arising now is how long will any class of men who profess respectability, try to excuse this barberous state of affairs. It is terrible, and it should not longer be permitted. The facts have been telegraphed to His Excellency Gov. Holden, and in the mean time the militia and all officers in the country are in hot pursuit of the murderers.
