Jun 2, 1869 Charlotte Democrat "Loyal" Militia - About twenty five of the Jones county "loyal" militia all negroes and under the command of a negro, marched our of the city, yesterday morning, on their return to Jones county. They had come here on Sunday for the purpose of bringing prisoners accused of the assassination of Colgrove. The "militia" was armed in all the paraphernalia of modern warfare, and looked every inch the villains they are. Newbern Jour. Further from Jones County - The Newbern times says that besides the house of Mr. Haswell, those of Calvin Koonce and Shade Loftin were burned. Mr. John F. Wooten's was also fired, but a son of Mr. Wooten's fired at the incendiaries and drove them away. Mr. Haswell was arrested for the murder of Colgrove and the negro Jones, upon the dying declarations of Jones, which the Times says is very convincing evidence. The Journal of Commerce, on the other hand, says that the negro had previously stated that he saw no one. Mr. Haswell was visited in jail and says he will be able to prove an alibi. Several gentlemen had arrived in Newbern to procure a writ of habeas corpus in Mr. Haswell's case. The investigation will be held Friday.
