She was accustomed to keeping a lamp burning all night in her bedroom, in which she slept alone, and with the door locked. On last Sunday morning smoke was discovered issuing from her room, and, the door being locked and all efforts to arouse her failing, the door was broken down with an axe, and so dense and suffocating was the smoke that, at first, no one could enter the room. As soon as possible, however, persons rushed in and found Mrs Patterson dead, having been suffocated by the stifling smoke. It seems that the lamp had exploded and set fire to the bed clothes, which suffocated her before she could awake and escape from the room.
