Whitfield: Thomas and William Routledge moved to Texas, and Sue and Fannie went too. A. W. [Gus] Whitfield moved them, in a covered wagon. Clyde went, too [apparently later] and tried it - had about a 100 acre ranch - stayed 6 or 8 months. Fannie living, Sue dead. William was a Baptist preacher - lived in a "double-barrel" long cabin - had a woman [and her son] as a housekeeper - he had a fancy dress watch and chain. He possibly preached in a tuxedo. A double barrel log cabin is 4 big rooms and a dining-room and kitchen Augustus Washington was called Gus William Constantine Whitfield was called Will James Augustus Whitfield (son of Lanie and Will) was called Jim James George Whitfield was called Jim and/or J. G. DeLeon Augustus Whitfield was called DeLeon At the time these notes were made, James Augustus Whitfield, a Kinston jeweler, had in his store safe a small coin bank containing several old coins, and a button from the Confederate uniform of his grandfather Augustus Washington (Gus) Whitfield. Gus was a member of Company "A", 40th North Carolina Troops, which was also known as the 3rd Heavy Artillery. The button is a domed brass button with a large Roman letter A, and is back-marked "HT&B Manchester".
