Lenoir County, NC - Davenport Collection NEWSLETTER INTRODUCTION AND FAMILY HISTORY Marguerite Martin, who inherited the original documents that are now in the Joyner Library, Manuscript Division under the Davenport Papers #1079.1, provided the information on this family. The original William Davenport was listed in the 1790 census of Pitt County and then moved to Lenoir County in 1800. He was bc 1755 maybe in Pitt County but his parents and wife are unknown. The family was in possession of an original Land Grant at one time; however, it was loaned to an attorney to be copied and was never seen again. DNA testing has connected this family with the Tidewater Davenports of the Northern Neck of Virginia that includes Lancaster County. The original settler in that area was John Davenport of England. Some of the research on the family was done by Ruby Nobles Ervin the first cousin of Marguerite's mother. "The trunk that was found a couple of years ago containing Richard Noble's papers was found at my grandfather's store which was built for him by Steven Davenport which he was about 20 years old. It was bought by Mr. Tyndall and moved to his place in Pink Hill. The store's original location was on the home place of Steven and Cora Davenport. It is now in the Noble family." On the outside of the deed it gives the grantee as William Devenport not William Devenport Peters and the Cross Indices gives it as William D. Peters. In Book 19 of the Cross Indices on page 277 the grantor is spelled Tull so neither the surname of the Grantor or Grantee is completely clear. William Davenport Peters sold land in Pitt Co. in 1790 and on the 1800 Lenoir Co Census there was a William Peters SS of the Neuse River. Marguerite was not aware of William Davenport Peters so there are many questions that need to be researched Indenture – 12 March 1801 – John Tutte to William Devenpourt Peters both of Lenoir Co – 233 pounds, 10 shillings for several tracts – first tract on NS of Trent River near a place called Chaneys Ford – bounded as follows to wit: the first piece of land being a survey patented by Sarah Amelia James 18 Aug 1763 also on the SS of Trent River containing 100 acres of land – the second survey at the edge of the Trent River low grounds of 300 acres being the other survey granted to William White on 27 Nov 1785 – except the following two pieces of land – the first at the head of Cabbin Branch to the mouth where it emptys into Trent River which is the beginning of the 300 acre tract – about 100 acres – the 2nd a small part of the first survey of 100 acres that lies on the SS of the Trent River about 6 or 7 acres WIT: Jas.
