Lenoir County, NC – Collections – Whitfield-Wooten Papers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WHITFIELD – WOOTEN PAPERS UNC – Chapel Hill – Southern Historical Collection – Collection #1257 There are numerous letters in this Collection, which I did not have time to transcribe. The Whitfield family is fairly well documented but some of these letters might offer additional information. In addition to the two Whitfield Collections at UNC there is also one at Auburn University which contains a number of letters. Nathan Bryan Whitfield moved to Marengo Co., Alabama and built one of the finest homes in that state, Gaineswood, which is today a museum. His brothers, Edmund and Needham Whitfield moved to Monroe Co., Mississippi. Allen Wooten of Lenoir County married Lucy Whitfield and they remained in NC. There is a good family genealogy as an introduction to this Collection and that family history is online. There are also a number of Wayne County Deeds in this Collection, but I did not do all of them. KETHLY END OF DOCUMENT LETTER MARY ANN WHITFIELD TO MRS. SALLY E. WHITFIELD Pleasant Plains, Morengo City, Ala. Sept 28th, 1842 My dear Sister, I have put off writing to you from time to time until I am almost ashamed to do so now. It has not been for the want of an inclination I can assure you but my feelings have been such for the last few months that I could not bring my mind to bear upon the great loss that we have sustained since we last met. My distress has been great for the death of my brother but I know my dear sister, it cannot be compared to what you and your children have experienced in the loss of a kind husband and affectionate Father, but I hope kind Providence will enable us all to bear it with fortitude. We have had a great deal of sickness in this country for the last six months, my family has escaped so far. Brother’s family has suffered severely, he has lost three very promising children, he bore the loss of the two youngest (JAMES and SALLY) with considerable fortitude, but he can hardly realize the death of so lovely a child as his dear little Edith, who died the twenty ninth of August, the third day after she was attacked with congestive fever. Mr. WHITFIELD has been well as usual this summer, he is absent at this time on a visit to Mississippi, he expects to meet Brother BOAZ in Aberdeen who left here last July accompanied by Cousin WILLIAM WHITFIELD, RACHEL’S brother, to travel for his health. He got as far as Mc ?innville??? in Tennessee and there he was confined for several weeks. The last letter we received from him he spoke of coming home and wished my husband to meet him at Brother NEEDHAM’S in Aberdeen. They were still at Brother MICHEL’S when I heard from there last except his daughter MARY ANN who has been very sick this summer with billious fever. Cousin BRYAN CROOM and family spent the summer in visiting their friends and relations in Ala. They passed here last June on their way to Brother RICHARD’S. They still keep up their style of travelling in a coach and four. Brother NATHAN received a letter from Cousin ALLEN a few days ago. The first time we have heard from No Carolina for a long time. I wish it was so we could hear oftener from ourf native state than we do. You and your family and Brother GEORGE and his, are very near and dear to me and if we cannot see each other it would be a great pleasure to hear from you all whenever it is convenient for you to write. Give my best love too cousin LUCY and tell her I am very much obligated to her for the nice present she sent me by Cousin MARY ELIZABETH. Do my dear sister write to me and let me know al about your children and friends generally. Kiss your dear children for me and tell them I wish to see them very much. Give my love to Brother, GEORGE, Cousin ALLEN and Cousin TABITHA and accept for yourself the love of your truly affectionate Sister. Signed MARY ANN WHITFIELD ESTATE OF JAMES B.
