Per geneaologist and Sutton descendant, Martha Mewborn Marble, S.I. was the purported, although not proven, son of Thomas Sutton, son of Benjamin and Sarah Hardy Sutton. S.I.’s mother is unknown. It is believed that S.I. was the first educator from the Bucklesberry community who was paid for his services. There are ten receipts in the Clellan Sutton Collection that document S.I.’s tutorial services. S.I. was arguably the most accomplished Bucklesberry native of the 1800s. Six articles that chronicle his life were published in 2017 in the La Grange, NC newspaper, THE WEEKLY GAZETTE.
