ANN SUTTON TO JERRY SUTTON AND SAMUEL IVEY SUTTON INVOICE-RECEIPT, 1863 1863 Mrs Ann Sutton To Jerry Sutton Dr May 15th To 39 days tuition for Christiana @6½/ 3.83½ 1 Book 5/ .50 ______ Received pay S. I. Sutton 4.33½ END OF DOCUMENT Comments: Jerry and Jere are shortened variation of the name, Jeremiah. Two individuals with the name, Jeremiah Sutton, lived in Bucklesberry and were contemporary with Samuel Ivey Sutton: Jeremiah, Sr. (1836-1900); and Jeremiah, Jr. (1875-1945). The Jerry Sutton identified in this document is more likely the elder, who would have been about 27 years of age at the time. S.I., or Samuel Ivey, Sutton (1834-1904) would have been about 29 years of age. Jeremiah’s father, John, and S.I.’s purported father, Thomas, were brothers. Jeremiah and S.I., then, would have been first cousins. Jeremiah and S.I. were possibly in a partnership where they made instruc- tional/educational services available to the Bucklesberry community.
