BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SUTTON TO ANNIE HILL SUTTON, 1862 Six Months after date with interest from date we promise to pay Benj. F. Sutton exr. of Hardy Sutton snr deceased or order the sum of thirty-Six 60/100 Dollars for Value received witness our hands & seals Jany 9th 1862 [lower-right corner of the document has been torn away.] [back side] Mrs Ann. Sutton’s note. END OF DOCUMENT Comments: Hardy Sutton died Sept. 11, 1861, approximately four months before the date of this promissory note. This is the second document in the Clellan Sutton Collection in which the suffix, Sr. (Senior), occurs with Hardy Sutton's name. Technically, Sr. was incorrectly assigned since none of Hardy's and wife, Annie Hill Sutton's sons were named Hardy Sutton, Jr. The name(s) and accompanying signature(s) of the borrowers of this document have been torn away. The seal that accompanied a name is partially observable. The inscription on the back side of the document, 'Mrs Ann Sutton's note,' makes it unambiguously clear that the torn away signature on the front side of the note was hers. However, the plural forms of words used in the narrative of the note suggest there may have been at least one other signature that accompanied Ann's. This name remains unknown. Ann (or Annie Hill) Sutton was the wife of Hardy Sutton. Benjamin Franklin Sutton was one of their 14 children, was the executor of his father's estate, as indicated in the note. Why Ann, widow of Hardy (deceased) had to borrow money from her husband's estate that was being managed by her son, Benjamin Franklin, also remains a mystery.
