Comments:

Clellan Sutton wrote the name on the back of the photograph. Per 
Estelle Sutton Creech (1922-2017; personal communication), Ashley 
Sutton (1877-1936) had club feet. Although he never married, Estelle 
disclosed that Ashley was the biological father of Orriton Sutton 
(1912-2008), mulatto son of Sue Sutton Dawson, a black woman from 
Bucklesberry.

As an 18-year old, Orriton was listed as a lodger in the 1930 Census 
household headed by Ashley Sutton, The Census taker, however, unaware 
and uninformed of Orriton's paternity, recorded 'None' for the
relationship between him and head of household. In the 1940 Census 
taken after Ashley's death in 1936, Orriton was still living in his 
father's residence, but Ashley's sister, Lucy Sutton (1887-1961), 
executor of Ashley's estate who never married, was named head of 
household. Orriton was listed in this Census as a servant. Orriton 
lived to the age of 97.
