BENJAMIN SUTTON SURVEY, ca. 1780

John Giles,s Corners of 160 Acres of Land Begining at a water Oak and 
Standing in an Island of said Pososon [sic.] Called Archibald Muckelroys 
Island and runs South 60 W.52 pole then Due South 30 pole then E. 270 
pole then No. 20 E. 128 pole then So. 81 W. 212 pole then with Direct 
line to the Begining____

The Corners of Benjamin Suttons Vacant Land Begining at a gumb Burnetts 
Corner and runs with his line E. 228 pole to a gum Thos. Uzzells Corner 
then with his line No. 52 pole near Said Suttons Begining Corner a sweet 
gumb then with his Own Given line So. 80 W. 240 pole to the Begining

Comments:

No date is indicated on the survey. The reference to Benjamin Sutton 
(b. ca. 1752; d. 1837), son of John Sutton (b. ca. 1730; d. bef. 1773), 
as a landowner would suggest that Benjamin was of legal age, minimally, 
21 years old at the time this document was prepared and written. A circa 
date of 1773, then, could be assigned to it.

John Sutton named herein would not have been Benjamin’s father, John (b. 
ca. 1730) since he died before 1773. Rather, this John was Benjamin’s 
brother, John, Jr. (b. ca. 1758; d. 1820-1830). In order to have served 
as a witness for this document, John, Jr. also had to be of legal age or 
at least 21 years old.

Therefore, a more likely circa date of 1880 has been assigned to this 
document.
