Lenoir County, NC - COLONIAL CEMETERY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ COLONIAL CEMETERY From Article in the Free Press – 21 May 1957 – written by Miriam Maynard and used with permission of the Free Press She stated legend has it that Jesse Cobb established this cemetery on his plantation. His home was nearby on Bright Street. The cemetery is off West Shine Street between Herritage and Queen Streets. She states it is overgrown. NOTE: The last time I was in it, about 20 years ago, it was in good condition, mowed and no underbrush. It is possible that some of the stones she could not read are now easier to access. Or some of the stones may be gone at this point. Obviously there are many other burial sites than remaining stones. All of the stones remaining are for members of the Cobb family. (mmm) She stated legend states the oldest cemetery in Kinston was located near the Hines Ice Cream plant on the corner of Gordon and Herritage Street but it is long gone.
