Lenoir County, NC - Cemeteries File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Bob Gardner James Madison Spence Cemetery Liddell, Lenoir County, North Carolina - documented on a visit by Bob Gardner and wife Shirley Spence Gardner on August 26, 2001 Directions: Follow NC 903 South from its intersection with Daly Chapel Road, approximately 1/2 mile. At the intersection of NC 903 and Liddell Shortcut Road sits a white house with several very old farm buildings in the back yard. The house, which is at present unoccupied, is surrounded on three sides by farm land, currently being utilized as a cow pasture. The cemetery is located directly behind the house, approximately 100 to 200 yards from the house, in the middle of the pasture. The cemetery is enclosed with a chain-link fence with a gate on the south side. The following is a transcription of all visible grave markers. All in parenthesis are my comments: JAMES MADISON SPENCE Died Nov. 18 1867 Aged 61 years "At Rest" NANCY Wife of James M. Spence Died Dec. 25 1893 Aged 77 years "At Rest" (This was Nancy Goodman, daughter of Aiden Goodman and wife Elcy.) BETTIE SPENCE Wife of J.M. Hardy (no dates - Bettie was a.k.a. Elizabeth Susan Spence, dau. of J.M. and Nancy Spence) JAMES M. HARDY Born July 19 1845 Died March 11 1920 (Beside James and Bettie Hardy are six grave markers in a row, indicating all as children of this couple): LELIA ROBERTA ROBERTA INFANT HEDRICK INFANT 1867 1870 1871 (no date) 1879 (no date) ERNEST LEON son of James A. and Winnie Spence born Oct. 28 1866 died Sep. 15 1870 (James Adrian and Winifred Wooten Spence. James was a son of James M. and Nancy Spence.) FERDINAND GOODMAN SPENCE August 25 1865 Aged 20 years 7 months (Son of James M. and Nancy Spence) URSULA HINES Died April 25 1893 Aged 42 years (Ursula was the wife of Timothy Spence, J. M. and Nancy Spence's son. Timothy is buried in the Maplewood Cemetery in Kinston.) N.W. PRICE Wife of J.B. Price Born Sept. 4 1851 Died Oct. 4 1902 "Not Lost" (This is Nancy Winifred Spence, dau. of J. M. and Nancy Spence. Married Jesse B. Price) EZEKIAL PRICE Dec. 29 1884 Jan. 21 1929 (Son of Nancy and Jesse Price) HENRY E. SPENCE Born Sept. 1 1852 Died Oct. 8 1902 (Son of James M. and Nancy Spence) MAGGIE WALKER Wife of H.E. Son of Henry E. and Margaret Born April 17 1891 Died April 10 1915 "They loved him most who knew him best" (This grave marker is in the likeness of a tree trunk - Woodmen of the World) INFANT Dau. of H.G. and Hattie Spence Nov. 24 1915 INFANT Son of H.G. and Hattie Spence Dec. 23 1914 Jan. 6 1915 (The two infants were children of Henry Grover and Hattie Rice Spence. Henry Grover was the son of Henry Evans and Margaret Walker Spence, and grandson of James Madison Spence. Henry Grover and Hattie Rice Spence are buried in Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro, Wayne County NC.) W. E. SPENCE Born March 17 1881 Died June 21 1897 "On thee our fond and tender thoughts will ever dwell" (This is Willie Ernest Spence, son of H.E. and Margaret Walker Spence) GEORGE L.
