Praise and Prayer by the Moderator, Brethren invited to sit with us, when Brethren HINES and ELLIS from the Plains, took seats. A door was opened for the Reception of Members. When ISHAM a black man was Rec'd on a confession of Faith and hope in Christ. The list was called and absentees noted. Letters of correspondence called for, Brethren HINES and ELLIS reported no letter but at home, in love and peace. The State of the Church inquired into and found in Peace. Delegated Brethren CROOM and WHALEY to the Beaverdams, WHITFIELD and ROUSE to the Plains. Agreed to commune on the morrow. The Committee appointed to procure a piece of ground for Meeting House purposes report unsuccessful adjourned with Praise and Prayer by Elder Alexander MOSELEY. Quarterly Term - Sept. 19th, 1835 Conference met and chose Br. William CROOM, Moderator, Praise and Prayer by the Modr. A door was opened for the Reception of members, Letters of correspondence called for, None. Brethren NETHERCUTT from the Beaverdams and SMYTH from the Plains, Took seats, and reported in Peace and love at home. The State of the Church inquired into and found to be in Peace. Delegated Brethren ___________________________________ p. 54 ROUSE, CROOM and PRIEST to the Beaverdams. CROOM, PRIEST, and ROUSE to the Plains. WHITFIELD, ROUSE and CROOM to the Association, WHITFIELD to prepare a Letter and by them we send one dollar to the Association fund. Appointed ROUSE and PRIEST a committee to Examine the Treasurer's return, who say there is sixty cents due from him. Adjourned with Praise by the Moderator. Quarterly Term, June 18th, 1836. Conference met. Chose Br. ALFRED and ELLIS, Moderator, praise and prayer but he Moderator. Brethren invited to sit with us. Article of the Constitution of the Association, a vote was taken on the subject and carried in its favor. Adjourned with Praise by the Moderator. Quarterly Term - Sept. 16th, 1837 Conference met and chose Br. ELLIS Modtr. Praise and Prayer by the Moderator. Brethren of the same Faith and ordain invited to sit with us, whereupon Brethren NETHERCUT and BOYETTE from the Beaverdams and HINES from the Plains took their seats. A door was opened for the Reception of Members. The List called and absentees noted. Corresponding Letters were called for the delegates reported (verbally). In Peace and love at Home (no Letters). The State of the Church was then Inquired into and found not in Fellowship. In consequence of Br. WHIT FIELD'S Fellowship for those who seceded from the Association A.D. 1835 and because of his non Fellowship for those Resolutions, Passed by that body which annexed the Seventeenth Article of the Constitution of said body (The Contentnea Association). On Motion of Br. WHIT FIELD, It was agreed but he Conference and Church that he be allowed to withdraw and have his name erased from the List of members, and no longer be considered a Member of this Church. Delegates ROUSE to the Plains, and WHALEY to the Beaverdams. Also ROUSE and WHALEY to the Association and by them send one dollar to the Association Fund. ELLIS, and W. SMITH from the Plains. Agreed that R. ROUSE, should visit the Plains and Beaverdams, and carry the news of peace if it continues. June the 20th, 1840. December 1840. Sandy Bottom, Quarterly Term Conference assembled, chose Brother A. ELLIS, Moderator the State of the Church inquired into and in peace a door of experience opened for the reception of members corresponding letters called for delegates to Sister Churches, Brother Ric. Brother Richard ROUSE, rose and said that he had good reason to believe that and of the members belonging to this Church was dissatisfied and as such the whole body must necessarily feel wounded and hoped that arrangement could be made for an investigation and reconciliation at the Suggestion of Brother Jacob HERRING, THE Conference agreed to appoint a committee of Investigation to see Sister E. CROOM (the member spoken app) and inquire of her the causes of her absence from our meetings and what her grievance is and also to site said Sister to attend our next Conference and speak for herself. Brethren Alexander ROUSE, Allen W. WOOTTEN and Evans WHALEY were appointed Committee as above then agreed to hold a conference for the above and report investigation on Thursday before the 2nd Lord's Day in Sept. next, then appt. Correspondence to Sister Churches. Brethren Evans WHALY & J. R. CROOM to Beaver Dam and Brethren Richard ROUSE, Allen W. WOOTEN, J. R. CROOM and Evans WHALY to P. PLAINS then agreed to send Brethren Allen W. WOOTTEN, Richard ROUSE & J. R. CROOM, Messengers to our next Association to be held at Nauhunty and to Commence on Friday before the 4th Lord's Day in Oct. next and that Brother J. R. CROOM write a corresponding letter to the association with a petition that the association come to Sandy Bottom next year, agreed that proceeding begin at 11 tomorrow. conference then adjourned by Praise. Sisters WOOTEN & TAYLOR was absent correspondence called for Brother L. NETHERCUT from Beverdam Church given in verbal relation and was received Brother W. SMITH from the Plains Church and gave in Verbal relation and was rec'd the State of the Church enquired in to project? to be in pease? Delegates to Sister Churches Bro. Rich'd. ROUSE & WHALEY to the Pleasant Plains Church, Deligates to the Association, Bros. Rich'd ROUSE & E.? WHALEY send tot he association fee $0.50 appointed Bro. March the 19th, 1842 the Church Committee Conference to memory which we deal it unnecessary to record. Wright SMITH, Clerk; conference opened, prayer but he moderator, the correspondence from Sister Churches, Brother Wright SMITH from the Pleasant Plains, Brother Loftin NETHERCUTT from the Beaverdam Church and gave Verbal Intelligence and was received the State of the Church was enquired into and found in peace the correspondence to Sister Churches Bros. Rich'd. ROUSE & E. WHALEY to the Plains agreed that Richard ROUSE & Evans WHALEY so as delegates to the association and that Richard ROUSE rite the letter and bair it and Seventy five cents to the association fund. December the 17th 1842 the Baptized Church at Sandy Bottom M. H., Lenoir County, N. Carolina met in Conference Chose Brother Wright SMITH moderator, Prayer & Praise by Moderator, a door of Experience was the opened for the Reception of members , none came forward. Letters of Correspondence from Sister Churchs, none handed in. Brother W. SMITH from he Plains & Brother L. NETHERCUTT from Beaver Dam took Seats with us and gave Intelligence that was Rec'd. April 15th, 1843. The Baptized Church at Sandy Bottom M. H., Lenoir County, NC met in Conference chose Elder B. BYNUM, Moderator, Conference opened by Moderator with Praise, the State of the Church inquired into professed to be in peace. A door of Experience was then opened for the Reception of Members, upon which came forward and was Received to Baptism, Joseph K. CROOM, Alexandria ROUSE and Elizabeth JONES. Conference then adjourned with praise by Modr. W. SMITH, Clk. ____________________ p.63 June 17th 1843. The Baptist Church at Sandy Bottom, Lenoir County, NC. In conference assembled, chose Elder B. BYNUM, Mod'r., Conference opened with Praise & Prayer by the Modr. the State of the Church Enquired into found to be in peace, a door was then opened for the Reception of members, none came forward. Corresponding letters called for none presented. Brethren from Sister Churches was invited to take seats with us. Brother Wright SMITH from Plains and Brother L. NETHERCUTT from Beaver Dam took seats and gave verbal intelligence and was rec'd the church then proceeded to the appointment of Clerk, upon which Br. Joseph R. CROOM was nominated and unanimously elected and accepted the office. It was then agreed that our next quarterly meeting should come one month earlier that is it shall be or commence on Saturday before the third Lord's Day in August next and for the future our quarterly meeting will be held in February, May, August and November in each year commencing and Saturday before the third Lord's day alternately. Conference next appointed delegates to Sister churches, brothers, R. ROUSE, J. R. CROOM and A. ROUSE volunteered to go to Beaverdam and Brothers, R. ROUSE, J. R. CROOM and A. ROUSE to the Plains, then adjourned with Praise by the Modr. Monthly Term Sept. 16, 1843 The Church at Sandy Bottom met in Conference chose Brother R. ROUSE moderator. Brethren from Sister Churches invited none present. A door for the Reception of members was opened none came forward. Brethren, R. ROUSE & J. R. CROOM appointed delegates to the operation Brother R. ROUSE to write a letter to convey us, agreed to carry 7/6 to the association fund for the purpose of defraying the expenses of printing minutes -. ________________________ p. 64 The Baptized Church at Sandy Bottom met in Conference on Saturday the 11th of November 1843. Choose Brother P. PUCKET, Moderator and no business being before the Conference; A door for the Reception of Members was opened upon which Sister Catherine WHALY came forward and was Rec'd to Baptism and was baptized on Sunday the next day. Also MAJOR, a Black man came forward with a confession of his faith, and was Rec'd and Baptized by permission of his owner Mr. Allen W. WOOTEN which permission is here Recorded. Canaan, Lenoir County Novr. the 11th 1843 Mr. Richard ROUSE Dear Sir, MAJOR has just applied to me for permission to Join the Church. I have no objection if the Church is willing to receive him. November 18th, 1843 (quarterly meeting) The Church of Christ at Sandy Bottom met pursuant to appointment and set in Conference and Chose Brother B. BYNUM, Moderator and after reading the church Covenant and Rules of decorum opened a door for the Reception of members none came forward. Letters of correspondence was then called for upon which Brother Loften NETHERCUT from Beaver Dam Church gave in verbal Testimony from that Church and was record and Brother Wright SMITH from Pleasant Plains Church gave in verbal Testimony and was record. The Church the appointed J.R. CROOM & Alexander ROUSE a committee to visit Sister Elcy GOODMAN and ______________________________ (THERE ARE NO PAGES FROM 65-71) p. 72 Thursday before the 2nd Lord's Day in Sept. 1845. Church at Sandy Bottom met in Conference according to appointment Choose Brother Benjamin BYNUM, Moderator opened Conference with praise and prayer then opened a door for the Reception of Members, none came forward. Next took up the Matter of difficulty between Sister Alcy CROOM and Brother Edmund CROOM, and agreed to postpone the same until Friday before the 3rd Lord's Day in November next also agreed to Solicite Brethren Josiah SMITH from White Oak, James LASSER from New Chappel, Parham PICKETT & Aretus JONES from B. DAM, Josiah GARDNER & Shaderick PATE from Naughhunty, Jesse C. WRIGHT? from Old Town Creek as helps in said dispute then appointed a committee to site Sister CROOM to attend on that day and make known her grievances (Brother WHALEY the committee to site) then adjourned by Praise. J. R. CROOM, Clk. Friday before the 3rd Lord's Day in Nov. 1845. Church at Sandy Bottom met in conference prayer and a few preliminary remarks by Brother Josiah SMITH then chose Brother Benjamin BYNUM, Moderator by whom the question was asked is all well upon which Sister Alcy CROOM made known her grievances and was taken up for Investigation and for debate and postponed till tomorrow at 10 o'clock by praise, Saturday Morning met according to adjournment __________________________ p. 73 Conference opened by Praise & Prayer by Brother Jacob HERRING after which Brother Josiah SMITH was chosen Moderator at the Suggestion of Brother Benjamin BYNUM. Next went into an investigation of the difficulties existing among us and agreed that Brother Josiah SMITH & Brother Benjamin BYNUM be entitled to vote with us and by the request of Brother Richard ROUSE the grievances of Lister CROOM was not taken up, then Brother J. R. CROOM declared non fellowship with Brother Richard ROUSE for having falsely charged him with Corruption in writing his Mother's? will? and at the same time Brother Richard ROUSE declared non fellowship with Brother Joseph R. CROOM upon which the Church went into an investigation of the Matter and first took up the case of Brother CROOM and Brother ROUSE failing to Satisfy the Church that his charges were true neither did he give a reason why he had made them Brother CROOM was retained in fellowship by the vote of the Church. Then took up the case of Brother ROUSE for having brought in to the Church false charges against Brother CROOM charges which the Church believed to be false and yet he was retained in fellowship by the vote of the Church. And thus the Church diverted itself all power to settle the matter between Brother ROUSE and Brother CROOM. Conference then adjourned by Praise. J. R. CROOM ________________________ p.74 Third Lords Day being in November 1845 The Church at Sandybottom being assembled. Brother Joseph R. CROOM complained that he had been treated with great injustice in the decisions of yesterday in as much as he was put upon his trial three times to justify vain ambition for writing his Mother's will and that too without any evidence or even Suspicion of Corruption therein as was charged by Brother ROUSE. He also complained of the inconsistency of retaining two men in fellowship (viz) CROOM & ROUSE when they had openly and that in Conference declared non fellowship with each other. He also complained that his grievances had been disregarded by the Church relative to the false charges brought against him by Richard ROUSE in writing said Will and all this without any acknowledgements on the part of said ROUSE for having this done and believing the Church to be in disorder by refusing to pursue that Courses that was catenated to bring about a reconciliation and for acting inconsistent with gospel order together with all the under signed in accordance with gospel order withdraw ourselves from every member of said Sandy Bottom Church who have -- acted in disorder & continue therein. SILVY ______________________________ p. 75 Monday 12th, of January 1846 That part of the Church of Sandy Bottom who declared non fellowship with the proceeding at Conference Saturday before the third Lords day in November last met at Sandy Bottom with and organized in a Church Day (then) Elected Brother Joseph R. CROOM our Clerk. Then agreed that Allen W. WOOTEN invite Brother Benjamin BYNUM to attend un in the mInistry and that he fix our eating at such times as would suit his convenience best and also to invite Brother John SMITH to attend our first meeting or as soon as convenient with Brother BYNUM for the purpose of ordaining a deacon. Our meeting then broke or adjourned and we hope that the Lord will be with us and enables us to live together in the Unity of the Spirit and in the bonds of Peace and that we may there by be build up int he most Holy faith. J. R. CROOM, Clk. Second Lords day in February 1846 Church at Sandy Bottom met in Conference chose Brother B. BYNUM, Moderator, then opened a door for the Reception of members and Redine CROOM came forward and was Rec'd to Baptism and was baptized the same day by Elder BYNUM, Conference adjourned by Prayer by the Moderator. CROOM ____________________ p. 76 Saturday before the first Lord's Day in April 1846 the Church at Sandy Bottom met in Conference choose Brother John SMITH, Moderator, after which a door fro the reception of Members was opened upon which Sisty Nancy DAVIS came forward from Union Church and was Rec'd to fellow - Conference then adjourned by praise by the Moderator. Quarterly Meeting Saturday before the 1st Lords day in May 1846 Church at Sandy met in Conference choose our beloved Brother John SMITH, Moderator opened conference by prayer and praise, Church Covenant & Articles of Faith read, Then opened a door for the reception of Members none came forward. State of the Church inquired into found to be in peace. Then proceeded to business and an objection being raised to words found in our covenant reading thus (and covenant to meet together every Lords day) and agreed that it should read thus (as after as Convenient) and the amendment was mad win Conference on the covenant. Then called for letters of Correspondence upon which Brother Wright SMITH gave a verbal relation from Plains and was Rec'd. Resolved therefor that we do lament the loss of his Ministerial services, knowing that none but God can fill the vacancy that has occurred by his death. His untiring, uncompromising and unwavering zeal in the cause of truth as laid down int he Last Will and Testament of a crucified redeemer, from our earliest acquaintance with him to the day of his death, together with his upright walk and Godly conversation, - for him confidence and respect among all his Brethren and Sisters who knew him and to know him was but to love him, both as a man and as a Christian but his course is finished, he fought a good fight, he kept the faith and we believe that he is now in possession of a crown of Righteousness which the Lord alone can and will give to all them that lov his appearance.
