At a meeting of the Vestry and other friends of the Parish, according to 
previous published notice, of the same- held this day on motion
Henry R. STRONG- was called to the chair.
Dr. Thomas WOODLEY acting as secretary, reported to the meeting, the resignation 
of our former pastor Rev. Frederic FITZGERALD of Goldsboro-whereupon on motion it 
was ordered unanimously that the Rev. S. S. BARBER? Of Pitt County be elected
As pastor of St. Mary's Church for the ensuing 12 months-Mr. BARBER? Duly 
accepted the same-and served for the time appointed-greatly to the satisfaction 
of the Church members-& being called to another field of labour was granted with much regret.

The Secretary also reported that by the Death of one lamented & esteemed friend & 
brother, William LOVICK deceased, for many a faithful & consistant member of this

What I found in Kinston when I became Rector,
December 1st, 1898.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church
This Church was destroyed by fire. February 18th 1900.

Received and accepted, as of this date, a letter dimissory from the Diocese of 
North Carolina in favor of Rev. John Hammond GRIFFITH, who had been elected 
Rector of St. Mary's Parish, Kinston, and S. John's, Pitt County.

Mr. GRIFFITH had already taken practical charge of those Parishes, adding that 
of Holy Innocents', Lenoir County; in all of which, as well as in the outlying 
country and vacant neighboring congregations, he has been doing active and valuable 
work.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church Badly Damaged By Fire. A Hard Fire to Extinguish..
Insurance $2,000 On Church and $300 on Furniture. Church to be Rebuilt.

The fire alarm sounded yesterday morning at 11:20 o'clock. It proved to be the 
Episcopal Church. A crowd quickly gathered, and the benches, windows, doors, 
organ and all things that could be saved, were quickly torn from the burning 
building.

The fire was discovered about 15 or 20 minutes after services in the church 
had begun. It was caused by a defective stove flue in the southeast corner 
of the building.

A line of hose was quickly laid by the fire company, and then an intense agony 
of fifteen minutes had to be endured waiting for a stream of water.

At last it arrived and two streams were played upon the slowly burning building. 
It seemed at first as if the fire would be quickly extinguished, but on account 
of the construction of the roof it was impossible to get water between the shingles 
and the ceiling, and for three hours and a half two streams of water were kept 
constantly pouring upon the building. It seemed at times as if it would be 
impossible to save anything except the foundation, but when the water was shut off, 
shortly after 3 o'clock, a considerable part of the building was left standing. 
The roof was burned almost completely off and the sides are badly burned. 
The firemen did fine work in saving the steeple..

There was $2,000 insurance on the building and $300 on the furniture. There was 
$1,000 insurance on the rectory. The church building is valued at about $4000 and 
is damaged to such an extent that it will take the whole amount of the policy. 
The furniture is valued at $500. A carpet that cost $150 was ruined. It is 
probable that the whole amount of insurance on the furniture and building 
will be collected, making the church receive $2,300 in all.

The rectory was not damaged.

A line of hose was laid within a few minutes after the alarm, and had sufficient 
steam been up to have turned on a stream of water, the fire would have probably 
been extinguished before much damage had been done.

As had happened several times before, the engine was unduly slow in steaming.. 
The engine has been made to steam in less than five minutes, and that it should 
take 15 minutes to get sufficient water, and this to happen several times, is the 
glaring fault of some one.

The members of the fire company worked heroically to reach the fire and stuck to 
their posts of duty for hours in the severe cold, and are worthy of the gratitude 
and commendation of the people of the town. Many citizens, not members of the 
company, did valiant work.

A meeting was held at the home of Rev. J. H. GRIFFITH Sunday night, and committees 
were appointed to solicit subscriptions to rebuild, to secure the grand jury room 
in the court house for temporary use, and to attend to other matters. It seems to 
be the opinion that the present church will be rebuilt.

The Free Press extends sympathy to the Episcopalians and makes a suggestion that 
something more substantial be extended, in the way of subscribing to help rebuild 
their church. We are sure the people of Kinston will gladly extend their aid.

The rector, vestry and parishioners of St. Mary's Church desire to express their 
hearty and grateful thanks to the Kinston fire department, embracing both the 
white and colored companies, and all others who lent a helping hand in subduing 
the flames which destroyed their church Sunday.

We are deeply sensible of the heroic and valuable work done by these men and 
take this means of expressing our Heartfelt appreciation.

The Board of stewards of the M.E. church have tendered the use of their 
church to the Episcopalians to be used to hold their Sunday school services,
and any other services that will not conflict with the Methodist services.

The ladies of the Episcopal church will give a silver tea at the rectory for
the rebuilding fund of the church, Friday evening, form 6 to 10 o'clock.
All are cordially invited. It is hoped that those attending will leave their 
silver mite with the ladies to help in the good work.

Mme. ELRADO, the Palmist, has offered and will contribute to the Episcopal 
church half of the proceeds taken in during her stay in Kinston. She is located 
at Hotel Bailey and will be at the service of the public during the following 
hours: 9 to 11 a.m.; 1 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m.




Consecration of St. Mary's Church

On Whitsunday St. Mary's church, Kinston, in the diocese of East Carolina was 
consecrated by Bishop STRANGE at a service attended by all the diocesan clergy, 
lay delegates and visitors to the diocesan convention, then in session, the vestry 
and parish congregation. The church was presented to the bishop, to be received 
into his jurisdiction as a working member of his spiritual family, by Mr. George V. 
COWPER in behalf of the vestry. Morning Prayer was said by the Rev. J. B. GIBBLE 
and the Rev. L. G. H. WILLIAMS. The bishop was assisted in the celebration of the 
Holy Communion by the Rev. Edward WOOTEN, the Rev. Drs. W.H. MEADE, and Robert B. 
DRANE, and the rector of St. Mary's the Rev. John H. GRIFFITH, Jr. At this service 
the council sermon was preached by the Rev. W. E. COX, as noted in the report of 
the convention, published in a recent issue. After the consecration the rector 
gave interesting data of the origin and growth of the parish. An offshoot of 
Christ church, New Bern, its records date back to November 1762, when George III 
gave an acre and a half of land in "Kingstown" for a "chappel." Under adverse
conditions the progress of St. Mary's has been slow, but Mr. GRIFFITH, who has 
served the parish since his ordination to the priesthood in 1898, has seen its 
communicant list increased from 50 to 132, and a promising future seems now 
assured.


Diocese of East Carolina
A Record of Usefulness.

Should the Rev. John H. GRIFFITH, Jr., the rector of St. Mary's, base his 
thankfulness upon the Biblical maxim, that "it is better to give than to receive,
" his "cup" should be well filled in this thanksgiving season.

During Mr. GRIFFITH'S five years' incumbency of St. Mary's parish he has been 
the moving spirit in the erection of four churches and one parish school, as 
follows: St. Mary's, Kinston; St. James',  Ayden; St. Luke's, Winterville; 
St. Augustine's (col.), Kinston; and Holy Innocents' Parish School.

This is a record of usefulness that any worker for the upbuilding of humanity 
should be proud to possess, and the beauty of it is that the buildings are all 
paid for save one over which there hangs only a small debt.
