Lenoir County, NC – Miscellaneous – Court House Records ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RECORDS FOUND The Kinston Journal, 20 May 1880 Last Wednesday two little boys of Tom Johnson, living near Southwest Creek, about three miles from Kinston, found two of the books belonging to the Superior Court Clerk's office which were supposed to have been burned in the last fire. The rascal had cut out and destroyed all the writing - about 20 pages - from the State Judgment Docket, and about 100 pages from the Civil Judgement and Execution Docket, and had thrown the books in a hole of water by the side of the road within a few steps of Southwest creek. Some of the "knowing" or superstitious, ones in the community say the author of the fire will now surely be discovered, as whenever a crime has heretofore been committed on Southwest creek, or the evidences thereof attempted to be hidden in its borders, the perpetrator has always been found out and brought to punishment. __________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
