Lenoir County, NC - Jesse Warters vs Nancy Herring ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #5931 JESSE WARTERS VS NANCY HERRING Supreme Court Case found at the NC Archives Dec 1854 – Lenoir County Jesse, Richard and Moses Warters were bound to Nancy Herring for $200 on 19 April 1854 Jesse and Moses Warters signed the Bond On 17 Oct 1853 Jesse Warters went to Court in Lenoir Co on a plea of trespass and asked for damages of $500 Moses and Richard were sureties to Jesse who entered into a contract for a slave in 1853 – the def was the owner of a Negro boy she agreed to hire to the plf on 1 Jan 1853 for $67 – Jesse was suppose to give a note but failed to do so until 11 Jan – the def hired the slave to someone else on Jan 11 – Jesse and Richard interviewed the def and she told them she had hired the slave elsewhere because she had not received the note – it was traditional to hire slaves for the entire year making arrangements in Dec The Court found for the def. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
