INDENTURE BETWEEN IVY BECTON AND WHITFIELD GRADY

This indenture made the 23rd day of March 1849 witnessith that Ivy Becton of the 
county of Duplin doth acknowledge that his treatment to his wife Elizabeth has 
been harsh and unkind and that thereby she has been forced or obligated to go 
home. He the said Becton being sensible of the wrong done to his wife and 
wishing her to return home that they may hereafter live as becometh man and 
wife.  To justify his and her safety or security in returning the said Becton 
hereby intenth into an agreement or Bond to Whitfield Grady of Three hundred 
Dollars to be paid to said Grady in case the said Becton faileth to treat his 
wife forever hereafter in a kind and affectionate manner as becometh a man to 
his wife.
   The said Becton further agreeth and is perfectly willing that in case of 
further ill treatment, then the oath of his wife Elizabeth shall be brought 
forth and allowed against him, 
   The securities of or to the above bond witnessed unto and is willing to abide 
by all the obligations and agreements of the said Becton therein.
  The condition of this obligation is such that if the said Becton be kind and 
affectionate as becomith him the obligation to be of no effect otherwise to be 
in full force.
