LOFTIN. It appears he intended to mortgage this property in 1901 and needed to clear up title and these abstracts refer to land transactions prior to the burning of the Lenoir Co. Courthouse and the burning of the Loftin residence. Not only was the Courthouse in Kinston burned, but the copies in the possession of the family were burned in a house fire about the same time. These re-recorded deeds refer to transactions and neighbors before 1880. These documents are in the possession of George E. Loftin of Kinston, NC who graciously allowed me to copy and submit them to the Lenoir County Archives NCGenWeb Project. The Records: 1. 200 Acre PATENT - 1794 NOTE: This document and Patent #878 appear to be the same 200 acres although there are two different surveys. Rob White, Shff to C. Markland Beginning at a water oak CHARLES MARKLAND'S corner on the NS of Heaton Pocoson and runs with FRANCIS LOFTIN'S line to a pond, his corner, to a pine ELKANAH LOFTIN'S corner, to JOHN STARNSON'S corner thence with HARRISON'S line to his corner, JOHN COART'S corner then with COATS, MOTTS and Heaton's pocosson and CHARLES MARKLAND'S line to the beginning, containing 200 acres 2. PATENT - NO. 878 State of North Carolina For sum of Fifty Shillings for every hundred acres paid by CHARLES MARKLAND - a tract of Two Hundred acres lying in County of DOBBS including Catta pocoson joining ELKANAH LOFTIN, JOHN COARTS, THOMAS KINNEY and his own lines on the SS of Southwest Creek beginning at a water oak his own corner on the NS of Heaton pocoson and runs with FRANCIS LOFTIN'S lines south --- to a pine ELKANAH LOFTON'S corner - JOHN HARRISON'S corner thence with HARRISON'S line --- to a pine JOHN COARTS' corner then with COARTS the meanders of Motts pocoson and Heatons pocoson , his own line to the beginning ---- Provided the said CHARLES MARKLAND shall cause this Grant to be Registered in the Register's Office of our said County of Dobbs within twelve months Alexander Martin Governor --- at Salisbury the twenty eighth day of September 1791 Enrolled in the Register's Office in Lenoir County this 21st day of Septr 1792 D. Caswell, Regr. There are two surveys for this land giving the same description as above. C. MARKLAND, Surveyor. The 2nd survey includes a map and the survey was done on April 4th 1796 with the same land description and with FRANCIS LOFTIN and ELKANAH LOFTIN as CC 3. LOFTIN of Lenoir County to B. H. LOFTIN for twenty five hundred dollars convey a tract adj land of J. C. MARTIN and SUSAN E. SUTTON; beginning in E. P. LOFTIN'S line; containing 237 acres and is the same land conveyed byJ. B. CHECK INITIALS by E. N. LOFTIN and wife 21 December 1878 Registered June 23 1881 by B. S. TAYLOR 5. A Map compiled from old papers by A. CHENEY, C. E. for G. F. LOFTIN NOTE: It appears this map was done in the 1900's and was probably related to the pending loan or mortgage on this property. This map is an attempt to show land belonging to this family in the mid to late 1800's and where it came from. North Border - South West Creek with a 570 acres tract - on the border of Upper Trent Road - E. F. COX to E. P. LOFTIN 800 acre tract - S. E. LOFTIN to E. P. LOFTIN - one of the lines is a pine in JOHN COX'S corner, East corner of the BAKER land adj MARKLIN'S line, adj WOOTEN'S land BARKER - 100 acres - S. H. L. to E. P. L. 316 acres tract - S. H. LOFTIN to E. P. LOFTIN - adj 570 acres tract and the 800 acre tract NOTE: The three below instruments appear to be copies of deeds at the Lenoir County Courthouse. They are also in the Abstract Collection with some discrepancies noted. The Courthouse deeds should be consulted. 1. DEED - S. E. LOFTIN TO E. P. LOFTIN - dated 24 March 1882; Acknowledgement 21st April 1882; recorded 28 April 1882 Book 3 page 471, Lenoir County, NC Consideration of $5.00 This deed made this 24th, day of March 1882, by S. E. LOFTIN of the State of North Carolina, and the County of Lenoir, to E. P. LOFTIN, of said State and County: Witnesseth, that whereas on or about the year of 1858 the said S. E. LOFTIN did execute and deliver to said E. P. LOFTIN a Deed in fee simple for the hereinafter described tract or lot of land, and whereas the said Deed was destroyed by fire, which burned the resident of said E. P. LOFTIN, in April 1880, and whereas the record of said Deed, which had been duly recorded in said County, was also destroyed, together with other records of said County, Now therefore , this Deed Witnesseth that in consideration of the premises and the further consideration of five dollars ($5.00) to me paid by the said E. P. Loftin, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained and sold to said E. P. LOFTIN and his heirs the following described tract or lot of land, lying and being in the said State and County: Beginning at a stake known formerly as the corner of the GUY LOFTIN land, now owned by R. W. KING and ALFONZO PATTERSON - adj JOHN COX, BARBER, corner of the MARLIN 80 acre Patent, MARKLIN 200 acres Patent, WOOTEN and SUTTON'S line --- containing 800 acres more or less. LOFTIN - DEED - date of deed 24 March 1881; date of acknowledgement - 16 August 1881; date of Record 19th Aug 1881 Book 2 page 424 Lenoir County Consideration $5.00 Witnesseth. That for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars to them paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, and the further consideration of having heretofore executed to said E. P. LOFTIN Deeds in fee simple with warranty for valuable considerations to the hereinafter granted land which said Deeds were duly recorded in the Office of register of Deeds of said county and afterwards both the Records and the originals were destroyed by fire. (The Deed contains description of three tracts not in the Caption lands, then it continues with the follow description, which is part of the Caption lands,) Also one other tract conveyed as aforesaid, beginning near the road - old ditch - 316 acres more or less, the same being known as the NEEDHAM LOFTIN lands. ROBINSON, J. B. LOFTIN, NS Heatons pocosin, COX'S line, a corner formerly COART'S, Motts and Heatons pocosin containing 200 acres being the lands granted to CHARLES MARKLAND by Patent dated Sept 28, 1791 - this was known as the NEEDHAM LOFTIN LAND 2nd tract beginning on "Dog Knowed" corner (now?? J. B. LOFTIN'S corner - containing 80 acres - in another page this land was given as as 100 acres and was known as the BARBER TRACT NOTE: The sure BARBER appears several times, but the surname was probably BAKER 3. Abstract of Lands of GEORGE FELIX LOFTIN - Woodington Township, Lenoir County, North Carolina E. F. COX and wife, CARRIE E. COX to E. P. LOFTIN Dec 1st 1883 This Deed made this the 1st day of December, 1883 by E. F. COX and wife, CARRIE E. COX, of Lenoir County to E. P. LOFTIN Sum of $5500 do sell a tract of land known as the WATERS Place, adjoining the lands of R. W. KING, dec, E. P. LOFTIN and others bounded: upper Trent road, the corner established by agreements between E. P. LOFTIN and ELISHA GRADY on the 16th day of April 1870, and runs south along LOFTIN'S line, KING'S corner, to British Road, run of Southwest Creek, to the bridge across the upper Trent Road near GIBSON HILL'S residence, towards E. P. LOFTIN residence, containing five hundred and seventy acres. Except one acre on the upper Trent Road deeded by E. F. COX to H. A. EDWARDS, Y. AFFIDAVIT - North Carolina, Lenoir County In the matter of E. P. Loftin, applicant E. P. LOFTIN, the applicant, being duly served, deposed and says, that the Courthouse and Records of Deeds and other Records of said County of Lenoir, NC were burned during the years 1878 and 1880 and that the Record of Deeds of part of the land upon which the applicant desire to secure this loan, were burned in said two fires and that the original deed themselves were burned in the applicants house which was burned on the --- day of March 1881, That the lands upon which the applicant desire to secure the loan are known as a part of the SHADE E. LOFTIN (Father of applicant) land, the SARAH WARTERS land, the JAMES W. COX land That 109 acres of the land is known as the J. W. COX land: That 300 acres are known as the SARAH WARTERS land and that 520 acres are known as the SHADE E. LOFTIN land. That the applicant is now 67 years of age and have known all of this land all of his life and raised on a part of it, his father, SHADE E. LOFTIN part, that he has never known or heard the title to any part of it disputed. That his father SHAD. E. LOFTIN, dec executed to him a deed for 800 acres of land in the year 1858 a part of which, to wit, 100 acres was included in said deed upon which the applicant desires to secure this loan - the said deed & record thereof were burned as aforesaid. That the said SHADE E. LOFTIN, executed to the applicant another deed for the same land in March 1882 in lieu of the aforesaid deed, reciting the burning of the said original deed and which said substitute deed in herein abstracted. That the said SHADE E. LOFTIN executed a deed to his son, S. H. Loftin, brother of the applicant on or about the year 1870 for another portion of the land upon which the applicant desires to secure this loan, to wit: 420 acres and the record of said deed and said deed were destroyed in the fire as aforesaid but the deed from said S. H. LOFTIN to the applicant for said land is abstracted in this abstract dated 24 day of March 1881 That the land known as the WARTERS land, to wit, 300 acres and upon which the applicant desires to secure this loan, the applicant has the deeds which are herein abstracted dated back to May 24, 1869. The land known as the J. W. COX land, to wit, 109 acres upon which the applicant desires to secure this loan was conveyed to the applicant by deed from J. W. GRAINGER & WIFE on March 24, 1881. That said land was conveyed by J. G. COX, son of J. W. COX, dec to F. B. LOFTIN on 14th day of July 1879 and subsequently conveyed by the said F. B. LOFTIN to said J. W. GRAINGER and the said GRAINGER to the applicant. That the said deed from F. B. LOFTIN to said GRAINGER was destroyed both it and the Record in the fire of 1880 but the old index shows that the said deed was recorded. That the applicant has held the office of deputy Post Master under his father SHADE E. LOFTIN, and has been and is now a Justice of the Peace and County Surveyor for the County of Lenoir. Signed E.
