HOWARD Deed Bk. 3, p. 647 State of North Carolina Lenoir County This deed, made this the tenth day of December 1881 by Stephen C. SPENCE and wife Susan SPENCE of Lenoir county and State of North Carolina to John HOWARDof Lenoir county and State of North Carolina, Witnesseth that said Stephen C. SPENCE & wife Susan SPENCE in consideration of one hundred dollars to them paid by John HOWARD the right of which is herby acknowledged – bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain sell and convey to the said John HOWARD and his heirs a tract or parcel of land in Lenoir county State of North Carolina adjoining the lands of John S. WILLIAMS, Amos STROUD, David WILLIAMS and others bounded as follows, vix, on the south side of the Lightwood knot road beginning at some bays? In the edge of Jesse’s pocosin and runs West 212 poles to Brown’s line (a stake) then with Brown’s line N 146 poles to the lightwood knot road then with the road nearly E to Dillahunt’s line then with his line south to Jesse’s pocosin then with the meanders of said pocosin to the beginning containing about 200 acres being the same tract conveyed by John S. WILLIAMS and wife to said Stephen C. SPENCE on 20th Feby 1867, which Deed is recorded in the Registers office of Lenoir county, Book 43, pages 189 & 190. To Have and to Hold the aforesaid tract or parcel of land and all privileged and appurtenance thereto belonging to the said John HOWARD his heirs and assigns to them any use and behalf and the said Stephen C. SPENCE and wife covenant that they are seized of said premises in fee and have right to convey the same in fee-simple, that the same are free from all encumbrances and that they will warrant and defend the said title to the same against the claims of all persons whatsoever. SPENCE and Susan SPENCE his wife personally appeared before me this day and acknowledged the due execution of the within deed of warranty and the said Susan SPENCE being by me privately examined separate and apart from her said husband, ----- her voluntary execution of the same, doth say that she signed the same herself and voluntarily without fear or compulsion of her said husband or any other person and that she doth still voluntarily assent thereto.
