W. TILGHMAN & wife Sarah J. TILGHMAN to S. H. LOFTIN, both of Lenoir Co., NC 6 Feb. 1885 State of North Carolina Lenoir Co., NC This Deed made the 6th day of Feby 1885, J. W. TILGHMAN & wife Sarah J. TILGHMAN of the County of Lenoir, and State of North Carolina to S. H. LOFTIN of said County & State; Witnesseth: That said J. W. TILGHMAN and wife Sarah J. TILGHMAN in consideration of One Hundred & Fifty four Dollars to them paid by S. H. LOFTIN, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged have bargained and sold, and by these presents do bargain sell and convey to said S. H. LOFTIN his heirs and assigns a tract of land in Lenoir County, State of North Carolina adjoining the lands of the MCARTHUR heirs & others & being on the North side of Briary Swamp, Bounded as follows: first piece Beginning on the run of Briary Swamp at the lower corner of lot No. one and runs with the line of said Lot N 15 W to a Stake corner of said Lot No. 1 in the division of the land of Chas. MCARTHUR, Dec’d. Also one other tract or parcel adjoining the above described piece. Beginning on the run of said Swamp at the lower corner of the above named piece and runs with the line of said piece N 15 W to a Stake, then N 75 E 29 1/4 poles to a Black Gum then S 15 E to the run of Briary Swamp then up said swamp to the beginning, this being Lot No. 5 in the Division of the land of the said Chas. MCARTHUR dec’d both lots supposed to contain about forty acres. To have and to hold the aforesaid tracts of land and all privileges and appurtenances thereto belonging to the said S.H. LOFTIN his heirs and assigns forever to their only use and behoof. And the said parties of the first part covenant that they use seized of and premises in fee, and have right to convey the same in fee simple that the same are free from all encumbrances and that they will warrant & defend the said title to the same against the claims of all persons whatsoever. In testimony whereof the said J. W. TILGHMAN and wife Sarah J. TILGHMAN have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year above written. Attest: J. W. TILGHMAN Sarah J. TILGHMAN State of North Carolina Lenoir County I, Thos. J. MEACHAM, Justice of the Peace, do hereby certify that J. W. TILGHMAN, and Sarah J. TILGHMAN his wife personally appeared before me this day and acknowledged the due execution of the annexed deed of conveyance, and the said Sarah J. TILGHMAN being by me privately examined separate and apart from her said husband & touching her voluntary execution of the same, doth state that she signed the same freely and voluntarily, without fear or compulsion of her said husband, or any other person and that she doth still voluntarily assent thereto.
