WOOD DEEDS 4 July 1836 – Deed of Gift – Jonas Wood of County of Green to James Wood, Dempsey Wood, Mary Wood and Avy Wood – for natural love and consideration for my said children the following property to wit: to my son James I give the following negroes: man June, Lewis, Isaac and woman Ester, also one half of my land in Lenoir County in Bucklesberry pocosin, also two mules and a horse colt, two feather beds and one half of my stock of every description; to my son Dempsey the following property: man Henry, John, Aleck and woman Rachel, two horses, two feather beds and the other half of my lands in the county of Lenoir with half of my stock of every description; to my daughters Mary and Avy the following property to be divided equally between them: boys Joe, George, Peter, girl Nancy, Mary, Penny, woman Sylvia, Sarah, man Emanuel and one half of the value of Washington, Bess and Isham, and also Onah, Sarah and her children to be equally divided between the said James, Dempsey, Mary and Avy after the death of Sarah Axum, also one negro boy Bryan I give to my Daughter Avy – with their increase Jonas (x) Wood WIT W. Metts, Regr A true copy on 14 April 1852 Stephen White Regr END OF DOCUMENT 11 January 1842 – Deed of Release – Whereas by Deed of Gift bearing date 4 July 1836 Jonas Wood for natural love and affection gave unto his children – James Wood, Dempsey Wood, Mary Wood & Avy Wood certain negroes and lands, the said Mary having since intermarried with Thomas Uzell & the said Avy having intermarried with William Warters – at the date of said Deed of Gift the said Jonas Wood was largely indebted to Sundry persons among them John C. Washington & James Pridgen – the said Washington and Pridgen obtained a Judgement of Execution at Lenoir Court against Jonas for said debts and the said Gift was declared fraudulent, inoperative and void – said executions levied against said negroes & lands and exposed to sale by the Sheriff of Lenoir Co and said negroes and land purchased by Jesse Lassiter & James Wood – they being the highest bidder – the land and following negroes viz: Isaac, Sarah, Harry, Judah, Tryan & child, Isaac by James Wood and Penny, Manuel, George, Nancy, Mary, Peter, Henry, John, Bryan, Rachael, William, Jim, Lewis, Easter, Isham, Bess, Washington & Sarah by Jesse Lassiter – the said Jesse Lassiter did by deed of 7 Feb 1838 delivered unto Jonas Wood the following negroes viz: Penny, George, Nancy, Mary, Peter, Manuel, Henry, John, Bryan, Rachel, William, Jim, Lewis, Easter, Isam & Bess – then the said Jonas Wood by deed dated 8 Feb 1838 conveyed to James Wood the following negroes viz. June, Easter, Lewis & Nancy and to William Warters the following negroes viz; Manuel, Mary, Bryan, Joe and Penny & to Dempsey Wood the following negroes viz.
