Curl & Williams family collection (Lenoir Co., NC) Lenoir County, NC Enoch Noble Collection Letter from B. W. BROWN to Enoch NOBLES, Comfort, Jones Co., NC Mount? Pleasant - Aug (unable to read) Dear Cousin, After much long and sober reflection I take the present opportunity of writing you a few lines which I hope at least may afford you some gratification. All things seem in a gloomy condition just at this time as well as the whole summer, which has ?: for it has been very dry ever since last March, and of course our Corn — is very short, the Cotton small & some say short crops but it will long enough we all think, to make a low price at any rate. We are all well, but Mother, who has been very sick indeed, for about a week but at this time she is a little better; the people in the vicinity are generally healthy an din a prospering condition so far as I am as — of judging; so whenever the thought of coming again to Old Georgia, pushes itself upon you mind, be not discouraged at this ( lery of hard Times) — you away for I would virtually suppose it was much harder Times in the Old North State, I here your lands are worn out, a great many of inhabitants left, than in the fertile state of Georgia, the garden spot of the United States if you — —— me the expression. You must leave again to Georgia and leaving some of your young men, for it seems some of these Georgia gals, — suited, with one exception all the gals you left here in this vicinity are here yet single, leaving plenty olds enough to become married wives, hanging on their fathers arms, ready to be taken off at any suitable period which it seems does never come. Miss Amanda M. GATHRIGHT? an orphan girl that lived at Mrs. H. LAWSON’S was married not long since to Mr. Robert HARRALL a young man that lived near Waynesville? We are all working in the field this year & have first commenced picking Cotton; it have about 150 Acres planted - guess about 40 thousand pounds open ready for picking. We have had many revivals of Religion in our vicinity particularly in the Baptist Denomination this Summer but none of the family commission have formed this summer — Dempsey B. SMALL who is married and has a fine daughter and a most splendid wife indeed; But from inability and want of experience I must close my comments feeble as they are by sending you my best wishes and respects, with all inquiring friends, & indulging the hope that you will write too, yours with highest regard. B. W. BROWN Write as soon as you receive and direct to Hawkinsville, Pallaski Co., Georgia To: Mr. E. NOBLES Uncle Dempsey’s and family all well and present likewise, Uncle Williams & in a word all the family relation so far as I know. Old Mother Greena?, Uncle Dempsey’s wife’s Mother died last Spring of the Dropsy. B.W.B. Mr. Enoch NOBLES Comfort Post Office Jones County N.
