KORNEGAY TO WHITFIELD GRADY - 1859 Envelope Mr. Whitfield Grady Lenoir Co Kinston, NC Allenton, Ala March 31st 25 State of Ala Wilcox County Dear Brother and sister I embrace the opportunity of writing to you & Informing you that I am well. Hoping this may find you and Family well; Dear Brother nothing very important to write at present; but I can say to you that I am teaching school about 60 miles from Sister. I am not doing first rate business now. I am only getting $28 a month for the first quarter. The next quarter they will have to give me $33 1/3 or I won’t teach for them. I am in a fine neighborhood and out of the mird and suaiuiz [sic] good Water and a very pleasant situation for a school; it is very hilly here; there is a Hill not far from the School House, about 200 feet, where you can see a great ways. Dear Brother, I am not married yet and no prospect of getting married; But have been promised to a young Lady of this County but she has declined the idea and I withdrew the courtship and droped the subject. I can say to you that I expect to come to ole NC for her yet if they are not all married before I can get back. I understand They have most all married up since I left. Tell Charity not to yet maried before I can get back. If she does you will win that dollar; I expect to be there about the last of Sept. or the 1st of Oct next. I am very obstanite about the girls now. I care nothing about them. Their blooming features and charming countenances and beautiful adornments does not take such an effect as it has formerly done. Turn over Tell little S. Howdy and all the children give my love to all enquring friends & to the Ladies too. There is one sweet little girl there Miss S ?? C that I should like to be single when I return to NC. O P had like to forget. Sister Zilpha wrote one a letter the other day stating she had several suitors and she did not know what to do with them all; I wrote to her to take one for she never would get along very well without marrying which I expect was not good advice. Tell Mr. G ?? Taylor and not Pincey that Cousin John Simmons is well. I was there the other day and saw them. I want to see you all very bad Dear Brother I close by saying your affectionate brother until death. March 1st 1859 Geo. W.
