HENRY SUTTON TO NANCY SUTTON, 1862 Craven Cou NC Febrruary 17th Dear Wife I Seat myself to write you a few lines to inform you that I am well at this time hoping this may finde you and all the family well nancy I have Sold my horse cart if Ivy Sutton Sends after him let him hav the horse and it will be all rite you must try to rent out the land under the hill if you can tell William if you cant rent it to somebody there is any there is any Dependance in that he must tend the best land and let the other lie out you must try henry west and mary if tey wont give half of the corn offer it for one third of the corn an fodder and if they wont give that Dont let them have it at no price let it lie out Nancy god bless you all that is my prayer Nancy if I never See you any more for god Sake an for mine too take good car of little tommy god bless his little Soul Nancy Dont tell him that I am at fort lane tell him that I will come home in a day or two Nancy be good to him as you can I know he is small and much correcting and I want you to Do that for my Sake but for ever pray that we may live together with our little children as we have Done and that the Supreme powers will bless us So good by my Dar Wife and children END OF DOCUMENT Comments: Misspellings indicated as they appear in the document. Tommy is Thomas Hardy Sutton (1858- 1936), maternal great-grandfather of this writer. William is William Cotton, brother of Nancy Cotten Sutton. Ivey Sutton is Samuel Ivey (S. I.) Sutton, grandson of Benjamin Sutton, Jr. Fort Lane was a Confederate fort at the time of this letter, located in the northern section of Craven County, NC. The Union forces destroyed the Fort on March 14, 1862, just four weeks prior to the writing of this letter. Fort Lane was formerly situated in the current James City, NC area.
