IMA NUNN MILLER TO WHITFIELD GRADY

Mr. Whitfield Grady
My Dear Friend Im informed you have undertaken with a Fellow by the name of 
Charles Cummings to teach school for you and if it is So if you don’t get as in 
sadly mistaken as the Husbandman did when he went out of a cold morning and 
found a snake frozen and brought him in and thawed him then fell to biting his 
Wife and children but you will not get off on as good timing as the husbandman 
did for he at a blow made short work of him but if you engage with him I think 
you respect it many days.  Without hesitate I say he is the greatest. Impostor 
that I have had any thing to do with he possess to teach Arithmateck, English 
Grammar philosply chemistry reading writing and the Heavens Knows what else for 
I cant tell all the branches an Sir if he can the least and simplist Branches I 
am powerfully mistaken  (that is correctly)  he comes the nearest to the 
appearance of a thing we call the Bull Bat when we are near its not Sir what 
Schemes She (sic) has recourse to to so attract our attention an other way for a 
blind.  I was just informed yesterday that he has undertaken several schools and 
in a way he disatisfied but to decide the question do you examine him as for the 
Solidity of the Branches he is as poor a speller or any thing Else as ever sat 
in charge of a school.  If you will come down I will satisfy you that – he does 
not understand keeping his school accounts – or if he does he does not 
understand making a calculation according to it – before you go too far with him 
inquire about him for I expect he has gone to you and told you a mighty fib. We  
dismissed him here and he has told you a great many things that is far from 
truth as East is from West.  I am with respect your Friend and Servant this 21st 
Oct.  1843.

N.B. I would come up and see you but is rather out of my power.  But if you wish 
to Educate your Children I will just say to get a man that knows something and 
is of confidence for if you don’t find my words verified Im mistaken if you can 
come down in this neighbourhood you can get further Information on the subject 
that you may not Rely on what I say for he dozs I will not be believed. It will 
not take you long to come down for as the proverb says a stich in time saves 
nine.
