Marble http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00022.html#0005285 January 30, 2014, 10:20 am JAMES NUNN TO ELISHA GRADY - 1853 French Camp Miss 5 Sept 14th Mr. Elisha Grady Sandy Foundation PO NC NOTE: The hand writing on the below is completely different than what appears to be the front of an envelope above, the date is different and so is the paper. Nancy Satterfield said the envelope does appear to go with the letter and Sandy Foundation is an area around Woodington according to what she was told growing up. She thinks the letter came from James Nunn and was addressed to Elisha Grady. Miss. August 31 1853 Mr. E. Grady my respected friend. Owing to my neglect I have deferred answering your letter which I received in June until the present But Sir I hope you will excuse me for Doing So but Sir since that time I have experienced a great deal of sickness. I was taken with the fever 23rd of July and I was down abot 20 days and was getting Better and then was taken with the chills. I have them every day and have got more them yet but Sir but I hope those few lines may find you all in Good health you said if I wished to be taken through the state of matrimony I must come back to the old North State again. Sir if I live I judge I shall come back again and perhaps between this and Christmas but as for going through the course of matrimony I can not say as yet It will depend upon circumstances. Elisha you must poke a good word at times for me but I will say if you wish to be taken Through that part I will tell you as a friend to just come to this Country for they are so tite runs. James Nunn NOTE: Nancy Satterfield verified there is a missing page and /or a quarter of the page is gone – the letter appears to have been torn or cut at some point. Without the missing page, I am not sure if “James Nunn” was a signature or the beginning of another sentence. It could actually be two separate letters. NOTE: The French Camp was near Pearl, Miss. Margaret – surname unknown – Nunn, widow of William Nunn, and her son, William Francis, moved to Pearl, Montgomery Co after the 1844 Lenoir Tax was taken. She was buried in the Nunn Cemetery and moved to French Camp but the stone has disappeared. Before it did a descendant stated she died 15 Jan 1854 making her born ca 1774. This information from Betts Nunn Gray who went to stay at the French Camp in the 1990’s and saw the cemetery and the old Bible. James Nunn may have been a younger son of Margaret as at least one census report supports her having another male child. (mmm) NOTE: There appears to be a crease in this page and there are indications letters are missing.
