Lenoir County, NC - Peebles Letter ~~~~~~~~~~ PEEBLES LETTER Sent by Darwin Marable - marable@earthlink.net - he received a copy from a cousin Richard Tally who was the son of Harriett Williams and her husband George T. Tally of Tarboro, NC - Harriet may have been adopted by the Peebles family in Scotland Neck, NC after her parents died in Lenoir Co. The letter was sent to Ida Williams Jackson, daughter of Joseph Williams and his wife Anna Daniels, and the wife of John C. Jackson assumed to be from Lenoir Co. The main body of the letter was typed but the note at the bottom was hand written and very difficult to read. It is assumed that this Peebles family was connected to John Peebles who md Harriet Cobb and lived at what is today Harmony Hall. On the 1880 Census for Lenoir County, one Henry C. Peebles, born in Va., was in the household of Harriet Peebles. That may have been the father of the author of the letter. *********** 2 Westland Ave, Boston, Mass Jan. 2, 1936 My Dear Ida: I was more than glad to receive a letter from you; and I have often wondered what had become of you children. Did not you have a sister named Lou? The Peebles' family lived in Essex county Va., but moved to Scotland Neck, NC. Their names are John M., Edmons, and James Peebles, and I think another brother but I cannot recall his name; then There was aunt Lou, Amanda, and Vienna and Mr. Steptoes wife, but I do not remember her name. The other brother was named Thomas Peebles. I am not sure but I think your mother was from Petersburg, Va. Your mother had a brother who clerked in my father's store at Kinston, I do not remember his given name, and I do not if he was killed in the war. My father before coming to Kinston clerked for uncle in Petersburg, Va. I know very little about my Peebles kin, and I could have found out so much about them from aunts Lou and Amanda before they died abou thirty years ago. Aunt Lou married a Mr. Battle, aunt Amanda married a Mr. Ferrell neither had any children, aunt Vienna married John W. Cobb my uncle on my mothers side of the house. He died several years ago – his family now lives in Richmond, Va. They formerly lived at Stoney Creek, Va. I spent many pleasant hours visiting at your fathers with Egbert and Carrie. What has become of Carrie? I used to hear from her occasionly, but have not heard from her in several years – the last time I had a letter from her she was at some place in western N.C. I forgot to mention your Lawrence kin at Scotland Neck, Eugenia and Kate they married brothers named Pendleton. Eugenia used to visit your mother, ther is where I first met her. I have been married nearly forty years – we have only one child a son – he's married and has four children John 12, Eleanor 1-, Sally Ann 8, and Virginia Lee 6. John and family live at Walpole, Mass twenty miles out – we run over to see them often – his wife is a superior woman in every way, and we love her devotedly. Peebles is Scotch – his wife's parents are Scotch Canadians and very fine people. I intend to take a trip to Scotland some time, although I'm seventy four young, strong and healthy. My sweetheart joins me in sincere love and best wishes for yourself and family. Affectionately your Cousin John H. Peebles, Sr. P. S. There are the Lands ??? and Venables of Petersburg that are kin to us. From the latter part of Dec up to now we have had severe cold. Mercury flirting with zero and plenty of snow. Have you any children? I will always be glad to have a letters from you whenever you feel disposed to write. ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
