My Dear Sir being weather bound as it is snowing today I am sitting indoors thinking and wondering over the past my mind travel (crease) back to the scenes of my childhood and early manhood. Scenes that are indelibly fixed in my recollection, the places where the happiest days of my life were spent; times in my early – torn – when I had not learned what trouble (torn) Sorrow was there my mind Still will thought I am thousands of miles away (torn) distant. The companions of my youth (torn) still there. Some are some in distant lands (torn) Some are gone to try the realities of the invisible world, and I am here in a strange land and among strangers and I hardly expect every again to see the lands of my nativity again But this is an uncertain world what we do (crease along this entire line) wife I can form no idea where I will be. I have been out here 6 or 7 weeks and have enjoyed myself as well as could expect among strangers. I am not doing anything at present (torn) go to work soon or I will be out of (torn) & that is the only friend or stranger (torn) This is best farming country I have (torn) the land is very rich The farmers (torn) are picking cotton yet the trouble here (torn) cotton out not to make it. it is also (torn) to be a sickly country and I suppose is the waters is kept in the rivers by levee (torn) thrown up on the banks on it would (torn) overflows in a flash the land is very low and have a great many bayous or ponds of stagnant water about in it without any chance of draining it. NOTE: There is probably a 2nd page but it is not on the scan. This document has several torn and missing places on the left side.
