Land is worth from ten to fifty dollars per acre and Negroes are too high to talk about and produce is so scarce that few persons are able to purchase what they need. Corn is worth one dollar a Bushel cash and is hard to get at that. Cotton is worth Eleven to Eleven & a half cents per lb. Meat Bacon is worth from eleven to thirteen cents per lb Pork eight cents per lb lard sixteen cents per lb. And on every article is as high in proportion. So you see this is a great Country. The land yields in great abundance and Still the above are the current prices. There are more people here in one mile square than there out there in three. I am living at my place keeping bachelors Hall of course, as none of the fair sex has sympathized with me in my lonely condition. Well I must do the best that I can and that you know well will be bad enough. Avirett is living with me. He is selling good. We have a negro woman who cooks for us & soothes &c. I am doing some practice. I have been engaged every day since I settled down. There are a great many persons here who are selling their land and going to Arkansas. This is a very good time to sell but rather bad to buy. You and Aunt must come out and see us. Give my love to your family & if you should collect that money please send it to me at my risk by mail. NOTE: The next scanned page almost looks out of order as the paper is a different size, the hand writing appears to be different and almost impossible to read but it must be the third page of this letter Well write me soon & let us hear from you and all getting on. I send your letter to Strata PO, Montgomery Co. Ala. I remain as ever yours. W. H.
