The very top of the scan may have been cut off but this appears to be a 1841 Election for the Clerk of Court or Superior Court in Blackledge Harper’s District. There is a splotch on one side of the paper. Behind each name are three columns but only the first one is readable and it says “Poor”. It is also possible the other two words are one word that could be a misspelling of “county pole”. Under each column next to each name is the number “1” which I am not including. Roger Kammerer looked at the scanned document and he thinks it was an election for Clerk of Court and maybe for the Wardens of the Poor or a vote to start or keep a Poor House. William Lovick was COC during this time period. On the 1850 census there was a Poor House located in the Woodington area so maybe this was the beginning of the Poor House in Lenoir County as there was not one listed on the 1840 Census. A Poll Tax would have given the worth of the individuals and this does not. This is a case of an early 21st Century interpretation of a mid 19th Century document. Jesse Waus (Vause-mmm) Superer Cout Clerk – NOTE: behind this is the counting method using the 4 straight lines with the 5th across) - there are 70 count in total William Lovick Superer Cout do – with 2 count in total William C.
