Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan, GA, Confederate Section 21, memorial number: 40052996. 1860 Federal Census, City of Huntsville, Madison county, AL. Listed as Abner T Hawkins, carriage maker, he is 30 years old. He is residing in the Southern Hotel. Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Pages 227-228. “Fifteenth Battalion-Sharpshooters. Major-A. T. Hawkins, killed at Chickamauga. General Cleburne gave special mention in his report of Capt. A. T. Hawkins, of “Woods sharpshooters…The battalion, under the command of Major Hawkins, was distinguished in the work of Cleburn’s Division at Chickamauga, September 19-20, 1863….While the gallant commander, Major Hawkins, was exhorting the men to keep good order one of his legs was taken off by a cannon ball. He died a few days later, one of the four Majors of the brigade who were mortally wounded in this battle.” In both Major A.T Hawkins and G.W. Hawkins military service records, G.W. is listed as his brother. G.W. Hawkins was in Co H, 30 Miss Vols. On January 14, 1864 brother G.W. Hawkins arrives to Bragg Hospital, Newnan, GA to pick up personal effects of A.T. Hawkins. He picked up $640.00, one sword, a Navy revolver, saddle bags, two shirts and blankets, a saddle and bridle.
