GATLIN, of the Army, now in Raleigh, will probably be appointed Colonel of the North Carolina Regiment of Volunteers. CAPT GATLIN is a native of Kinston, Lenoir County, N. C., and distinguished himself at the battle of Monterey. This is considered a good appointment. The Charlotte News 29 Dec 1893 The Newbern Journal says that Gen. R.C. Gatling, who succeeded the late Governor Fowle as adjutant general of this State in 1863, is now living at Fort Smith, Arkansas. He is now 86 years of age. One of his daughters is now a student at St. Mary's School at Raleigh. Gen. Gatling is a grandson of Governor Richard Caswell. He graduated at West Point in the class with Gen. Robert E. Lee, and left the United States army in 1861.
