Saunders: Raleigh, Feb. 18, 1850 Gentlemen - I very much regret it is not in my power to accede to your wishes, by joining you at your meeting in Kinston, on the 23d inst.; but as I have already declined a like invitation for that day, and wish to remain here this week, I trust I shall be excused. I shall be greatly pleased if the people of Lenoir shall now, as they did in the years of 1815 and 1816, approve of the Internal Improvement of the State; when their Senator, Jesse H. Croom, and their Commoners, James Manly, and Blount Coleman, voted for the principle of the State's contributing one-third of the capital. Such being the Republican doctrine then, why shall it not be the democratic doctrine now? We flatter ourselves the stock will be shortly taken, and the work commenced, which is to give us the great trunk of the Rail Road from Charlotte to the Wilmington Road, and from then, a branch to NewBern. Nothing is wanting but the proper spirit, and a strong and united resolution. With sentiments of high respect and esteem, R.M. Saunders W. Dunn, Jr., John B. Gaylard, H.W.
