Lenoir County, NC - Obituary of Mary E. Murphy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MARY MURPHY SISTER MARY E. MURPHY Copy found in a Bible owned by Mrs. Jake Strother. Original probably from a Disciples of Christ publication. Died at the residence of her daughter in Newbern, July 11th, 1880, of heart disease. Sister Mary E. Murphy, in the 66th year of her age. She was married twice and followed both of her husbands to the grave. She was the mother of eight children, and only one survives her, Sister Puss Stilly, who is known to our readers as a most exemplary Disciple. Sister Murphy’s young days were spent in Green county, and after the marriage of her only daughter, she accompanied her to Beaufort county, and from there she came to Newbern, where the angle of death bore her spirit to a land of glory, honor and immortality. Sister Murphy was a very consistent member of the Church of Christ, and remained a bright and unassuming light until death. She was a diligent student of the scriptures and seemed to be at home while reading of the rich legacy therein promised to the christian. She had been a great sufferer for several months, but we had entertained some hope of her recovery; with all her afflictions she never murmured or complained beneath the chastening hand of a merciful God. Her sufferings though great, were born with christian resignation. When Jesus called her spirit, she was able and willing to go, to meet Him, whom she had served faithfully for man years. We received intelligence of her death on our way home from the mountains, and was profoundly struck with sadness and grief, to learn that one of our good friends and pious christians had fallen a victim into the arms of death. Her body was taken to Hookerton, her old home, for interment. In token of the high appreciation in which she was held, in that town, all business was suspended and her funeral was largely attended. Dr. Walsh, the old veteran of the cross, preached an able and consoling sermon on the occasion; after which her remains were followed to the cemetery where we took the last view of a mother, sister and friend. She is gone. The words which say, “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord” can truthfully be applied to her. May we follow her humble and Christian walk, and meet her where there will be no sickness, sorrow, pain or death. J. L.
