In Memoriam Affectionately inscribed to the friends of Jno. W. Scarborough of Kinston, NC, who died at Ruddells Mills, Bourbon County, Ky. April 8th, 1874 John, when last I looked on thee I little thought so soon That friends and a weeping train Should follow to thy tomb Far from thy friends and home Friends that would bid thee stay Surrounded by a stranger band Thy spirit passed away. Though strangers stood around thy bier Full many a tear was shed. That one so young and lovely too, Must sleep among the dead. And the friends of thy heart O'er thy low death-couch bent, While sorrow far too deep for words Their anguished spirits rent. But ah! Ye cannot call him back, Dear friends your tears are in vain His eyes are closed, nor will they ope To earth so ..in things again. But though on earth he lives no more, In heaven he liveth ever, And ye if faithful soon shall meet Where naught fond friends can sever The wound your hearts now feel Is by His loving hand, He claimed your lambkin pure, To deck the Heavenly land He calls the pure of earth away To a home in Heaven above. Your little band is broken, But he is where all is peace and love. Will T. Scarborough was born July 31, 1850 in NC and died at Ruddells Mills, Bourbon county, Ky., April 8th 1874. His remains were taken to La Grange, NC and interred in the cemetery of the Baptist Church of that place on Thursday, April 18th, 1874, after funeral services by Jas H. Foy. Mr. Scarborough was of good family and was much loved at home and wherever he went. His character commended him to all. Coming to Bourbon county but a few months ago he was rapidly gaining the esteem and confidence of our people. Though dying away from home and among strangers his last hours were cheered by every attention that sympathy could suggest. Those who so kindly attended him in his sickness and prepared his body for its burial have secured to themselves a warm place in the affections of the friends and relations of Mr. S. In a letter from the family now before the writer they send the kindest remembrance to one and all who gave this young man any attention. The kindness shown by these strangers and the gratitude therefor of the stricken family show that there is still on earth noble principle, and that selfishness does not hold undisputed possession of the human heart. May such expressions of sympathy and gratitude by multiplied among us.
