Handwritten date on article.. Tues., Nov., 28, 1939 GEORGE SIMMONS DEAD AT AGE 77 Grew Up With Kinston, Funeral WednesdayAfternoon George F. Simmons, 77; well known merchant, died in a hospital at 7 a.m. Tuesday. He succumbed to a combination of ailments. Ill for weeks, his condition became critical at the week-end. Mr. Simmons was known to thousands in and around the city. He "grew up with Kinston," and few persons knew the city better. He was a man of good appearance. Until recently he appeared little past the prime of life. Few persons of his age could boast as much energy. He was known as a good business man. Many years ago he was a policeman. Surviving are a widow Mrs. Cattie Taylor Simmons, and four daughters, Mrs. Rudolph Fordham, Mrs. Lilla Bell and Mrs. Ruth Garthwright, of Kinston, and Mrs. Bertha Anderson, of Ayden. Also surviving are a number of grandchildren. The funeral, Rev. Ruppert Phillips, of the Disciples of Christ, and Rev. Jack R. Rountree, Espiscopalian, officiating, will be from the residence, 504 North Herritage Street, at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
