John had a distinguishing missing digit on one hand from a shooting incident. As a grown man, he was made Colonel of the State Militia, judge of Lenoir County Court, represented Lenoir County in the Raleigh Legislature for two years, was a Universalist and gave land on which to build the Universalist Church. A prominent businessman, he bought Governor Richard Caswell's mansion when he retired. His first marriage was to Sarah Taylor, daughter of Ephraim Taylor or Lenoir County. After Sarah's death, he married Nancy Blount (Chelly) Coleman, sister of Blount Coleman, who died leaving twins, Benjamin Coleman & Mary Elizabeth (called Betsy in NC; Bettie in MS), who later went to Mississippi, never to return to NC. His third wife was Ann Nancy Ballard Humphreys of Onslow County with whom he had six children: Caroline, John, Ann, Lott, Edward and James. Nancy Williams lost her daughter, Olive Branch Pollock in November 1, 1850, as well as her husbaand, Colonel John who died on December 11, 1850. Enclosed picture is assumed to be Col. John (notice ribbon Colonels wore to Military reunions and missing digits).
