s. Michael and Frances (Burton) H.;
Was maj., 1st NC inf., early in 1861; later maj., Lt.-col., and col., 33d NC 
inf.; col., 21st NC; apptd. brig.-gen., CSA, Jan. 17, 1863; maj.-gen., Apr. 
20, 1864. His brigade served in Army of Northern Va., in Gen. Early's Div.; 
comd. div. at battle of Cold Harbor; comdr. dist. of NC, 1865; surrendered 
with Johnston at Durham Sta., NC, Apr. 26, 1865.
Engaged in business in NC, and became pres. Seaboard Air Line system.
