LINCOLN COUNTY, NC - BIOGRAPHIES - Captain Phillip Null --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Captain Philip Null 1752 - 1834 The foremost Revolutionary War Patriot that ever settled in the Kanawha Valley, He carried his rifle for seven years from New York to South Carolinia By his 5th Great Grandson Charles Ray Harper 1750 Aug.21 Capt. Philip Null's Grandfather Johann Philip Null cane to Americia on ship ( Anderson ) Originaly from Alsace Lorraine, Provinces of France ( German at one time ) 1752 Captain Philip Null Born near Wrightsville York Co. Pa. 1765 Oct. 27 his father John Null died in York Co. Pa. 1770 - 1774 built 1st house where St.Joseph Boys Acadamy later stood. ( on Robinson Turnpike ) on Sewickley Creek also called The Col. John T. Fulton farm . 1775 Beginning of Rev.war joined Captain George Hudson's Heidelburg company Lancaster Co. Battalion Capt. Null carried his Kentucky Long rifle ( most of these rifles where made in Pennsylvania ) 1776 July marched by the statue of King George in New York which had been pulled down by some American Patroits who where full of the feeling of Independence a few days before. 1776 Aug.27 Philip Null was at battle of Long Island ( also called battle of Brooklyn or Flatbush ) Early that morning Null was with Col. Samuel Miles when they attacked Gen. (Sir ) Howe's baggage guard after fierce fighting Col. Miles and about 150 men where captured ( not Philip Null he and the rest retreated toward Brooklyn (was ordered to retreat ). Hard rain the next day no fighting. 1776 Thursday Aug.29 - 30 Gen. Washington on stormy night slipped accross the East River with his 10,000 men to Manhattan Island. Gen. Washington seen the futility of futher resistance on Long Island and through a combination of good luck and great management crossed with the loss of only three stragglers. 1776 Oct.28 at battle of White Plains was with the Pennsyanian Riflemen on left Flank against the Hessians Philip Null had a lot of friends captured at the fall of Fort Washington Nov. 16, 1776. 1776 Dec.24 Philip Null in command of a group of men getting ready for the crossing, when Gen. George Washington came up on foot and got in the way Null yelled for him to get out of the way, which he did and smiled and said nothing. Future Capt. Philip Null was embarrassed when he found out who it was he was ordering around. (After that Capt. Philip Null and Gen. Washington became great friends. ) 1776 Dec.25 He and Gen. Washington made that famous crossing of the Delaware, Somne of Null's friends escaped from the prison ship in New York harbor and swam ashore ( Andrew Ralson and Joesph Neely ) Philip Null was one of 2,00 men picked for the crossing. 1776 Dec. 26 battle of Trenton N.J. Philip Null participatied in the left wing under Major Gen. Nathaniel Green and defeated the Hessians under Colonel Rall .Then marched back to McCastles Ferry, stayed their 8 days. 1777 Jan.2 crossed Delaware again marched into Trenton again, A big British Army got within sight, after building great big bond fires. they went around the British Army. ( British had just left Princton ) British took possession of Trenton about dusk. 1777 Jan.2 - 3 after an appeal from Gen. Washington Philip Null was one of the 200 volunteers who under Col. Hugh Mercer who attacked a group of British Dragoons. ( which they took ) with this defeat Gen. Howe ordered Lord Cornwallis to leave New Jersey, which ment Gen. Washington with the help of Philip Null drove the British out of New Jersey. ( Battle of Princeton ) 1777 June 10 Penn. Militia made part of Continental Line even though Philip Null had been fighting with the Continental line for a while. 1777 Sept. 11 at Battle of Brandywine, earlier exchanged fire at Chad's ford Pa., Null was with Gen. Greene at main battle. was one of the largest land battles fought in the Revolution Philip Null was with Gen. John Armstroing and the rest of the Penn. Militia. Philip Null went with one of the brigades that helped Major Gen. Greene have a splendid stand which saved the American Army from disaster.. The army was battered by Lord Charles Cornwallis but remained intact. Caualties were high. Wounded was scattered all over town in little groups, many being moved to Turk's Tavern. 1777 Oct.4 at battle at Germantown Philip Null under Gen. Greenes divison on assault of the British right flank. And saw Gen. The Marquis de Lafayette get wounded. 1777 Philip Null also served in George Moore's 5th Co. 2nd Battilion Lancaster Co. Milititia and George Null's 4th Co. 1st Battilion 1777 - 1778 was at Valley Forge with Gen. Washington was a non - commisoned officer by this time was a very bad winter 1778 - 1779 Sent to No. Carolinia by Gen. Washington to help put down Tory up rising's captured by the Tory's they slit his throat left him for dead found and nursed back to health by his future wife's family Margaret Bushong Null 1755 - 1826 lived in Rockingham Co. Va. Dau. of Jacob Bushong 1735 - 1812 1779 Most likely married Margaret Bushong Rock. Co. Va. 1779 Dec.10 bought 320 acres of land Lincoln Co. N.C. 1780 April 22 Dau. Peggy Null is born. Sometime between this time and end of the war - Capt. Null's wife was forced out of her home by Tories and forced to beg for food for her children.(Margaret Bushong Null 1755 - 1826. 1780 Aug.16 with the Rank of Captaun leading a company of Militia at Battle of Camden S.C. under Gen. Horatio Gates, Saw Gen. de Kalb killed and was in that memorable 2 weeks retreat after that battle which was a defeat for the colonists. They keep the fires of Liberty glowing 1780 Aug. 18 Capt. Null was most likely at Fishing Creek another Tory rout. 1780 - 1781 fought a guerilla type war fighting with Gen. Andrew Pickens, Gen. Francis Marion, Gen.Thomas Sumter . 1780 Dec.7 most likely at battle of Kings Mt. ( no proof ) 1781 Jan. 17 Captain Philip Null was at battle of Cowpens S.C. under Gen. Andrew Pickens ( made General because of the Militia Capt. Philip Null was in.) Capt. Null also under the command of Gen.Daniel Morgan.( The Old Wagoner ) this battle turned the tide of the war. And defeated the much hated Colonel Banastre Tarleton's Green clad ( not Red ) British Cavalry, except for the 71 st Scottish Highlanders who where dressed in red. 1781 April 25 Capt. Philip Null was with the Swamp Fox cutting the suppy lines of British Col. (Lord) Francis Rawdon at battle of Hobkirk's Hill, which caused Lord Rawdon to return to his strong hold at Camden S.C. Or the ambush of Gen. Greene would have been lots worst. 1781 Sept. 8 Battle of Eutaw Springs Orangeburg S.C. fought under the famous Francis " Swamp Fox " Marion and Captain Null's old friend ( the Quaker) Major General Nathaneal Greene. The food Rum and Brandy found in the British tents was the downfall of the Patriots after they had the battle won. Even tough Gen. Green had lost his last 4 battles He and Capt. Null had pushed Gen. (Lord ) Charles Cornwallis up to Yorktown and his defeat. They had wore down the British forces in Soth Carolinia and won the southern Campaigh. 1781 Oct.19 Yorktown Captain Philip Null was one of the few officers from the southern campaign that was allowed to be at the surrender ( Capt. Philip Null and Gen. Washington where friends ) The formal Surrender which Capt. Null was at was Oct. 20, 1781. 1782 Jan. 2nd bought 200 more acres in Lincoln Co. N.C for 50 pounds in Wadel's line. Later Built their 2nd house like 1st one was the 1st house built in Lincoilnton N.C. 1783 April licensed to operate a Goal ( Jail ) in his home. 1783 April 28 son Henry Null born Lincolnton Co.N.C. 1783 July licensed to operate an Ordinary ( Tavern ) most of the local bussiness was run out of these.( rooms food,drinks,games ) 1784 - 1789 Dau. Elizabeth Null born M- (Moss ) ( Ridgeway ) Will probated March 14, 1842 Kanawha ( now Putnam Co. W.Va. ) 1784 Jan. 6 250 Acres of land on branch of High Schoals was a wittness to this sell. 1784. Dau. Julia Null born Married Jacob Saddler 1785 Philip Null appointed by court to run a goal (jail ) 1785 March 24 bought some black people for 250 pounds. 1785 June 17 bought 320 acres on the Catawba River 1785 Oct. 8 sold black people for 250 pounds. 1786 June 4 Gloria Null was born in Lincolton N.C. Married Ludwick Otterman b1811 in what ius now Putnam Co. W.Va. 1787 April 10 sold off black person ( Jack ) 8 or 9 years old for 130 pounds. 1788 Dau. Sarah Null born.Married Christian Harrold 1789 Son Francis Marion Null born Lincolnton N.C. . 1790 July 17 Philip Null Jr born Lincolnton N.C. 1791 Sold the first house built in Lincolnton N.C. 1792 Aug. 10 Captain Philip Null signed affidavit that George Hostetler served 9 months in the Continental line and served his full time and got his discharge for said service. Capt. Philip Null was offered proffered pay for his service but turned it down. Saying that his time and aid was freely given to his country. 1794 Payment for 13 bushels of corn given to Continental Army in Rutherford Co. N.C. (given Feb.25, 1780 ). 1797 Capt. Philip Null discovered Coal at mouth of Poca River Putnam Co. W.Va. now. 1798 Feb. 6 Land grant given to Philip Null in old Pendleton Co. S.C. Now Clemson Univ. their. ( 500 acres ) 1798 Capt. Philip Null Family is living back in Penn in Hempfield TWP. Westmoreland County Penn. 1802 June 17 Capt. Philip Null pays 500 pounds for 1,644 & ¾ Acres being half a survey made Feb. 13, 1796 in the name of Aruthur Nichols & John Reynolds in Kanawha County ( now Putnam Co. W.Va. ( Deed was made between Philip Null and James Mckelvey of HempfieldTwp. Westmoreland Co. Pa. Conveyed to James McKelvey 160 Acres on the Sewickley Creek, purchased from William Smith ( most likely Capt. Null was with the survey party Feb.13, 1796 that's when he discovered the Coal at the mouth of the Poca River. ) 1803 Capt. Philip Null moved his family to W,Va. On Warrants issued to him for being an Officer in the war 490 acres he traded his Warrants he used for lands in the in Carolinias for the rest of his 1,600 acres, and built his 3rd house that looked just like the other two. 1806 Capt. Philip Null transfers 250 acres of land to his Daughter Elizabeth Moss . 1811 Jan.14 Will of father of Margaret Null filed ( Jacob Bushong, proven March 23, 1812 Augusta County Va. Legant Philip Nou ( Noll ) ( Null ) 1821 Feb.15 Capt. Null's youngest child Philip Null Jr. 1790 - 1874 m- - Jane Fletcher 1796 - 1853 Dau. of William Fletcher they married in Gallia Co. Ohio. 1826 Capt. Philip Null's wife Margaret Null 1755 - 1826 died and is buried on farm 1828 Capt. Philip Null visited his son Henry in Westmoreland Co. Pa. ( Henry Harrison Null became an authorty on his grandpa Captain Philip Null,who told him lot's of stories about his military experiences ,When Capt. Null his grandfather visited "He was then an aged man and walked with a cane, I remember him well " Henry Harrison Null 1815 - 1905 said ) 1829 Jan.3 Officers exchange Treasury warrant ( part of 300 acre no. 2567 180 acres, and 100 acres on no. 2667 and another 90 acres on no. 2568 ) all Kanawha Co. Philip Null. Filed July 14, 1829. 1834 Capt. Philip Null Died at Pt. Pleasant trying to get a boat to visit his son Henry in Westmoreland Co. Penn. most likely buried at Tu - Endle - Wei State Park run by DAR, park in Pt. Pleasant. Capt. Philip Null Died of Cholera. Capt. Philip Null also told about the time they hd been on long marches in North and South Carolinia. Without food or much to drink. We had marched 20 miles that day came to a store. We pressed a hog, which was served without scrapings. We crossed the Dan river the next day. We marched another 8 miles and encamped. The next day the enlisted was searched and they found goods on two men from another company the men where whipped. The day before the same two men where given 10 lashes for disbeying an officer of the day. Marched 12 more miles the next day one of the men that was whipped deserted and the other one was sent to prison. Had another deserter the next day. A lot of this infro also came from Henry Null ( grandson of Capt. Philip Null ) b- Oct.15, 1822 Poca River now Putnam Co. W.Va. And D - July 16 1899 on 18 mile Creek Putnam Co. W.Va. And Elizabeth ( Null ) Moss ,Ridgeway who will probated March 14, 1842 now Putnam Co. W.Va. On 18 mile creek at her nephrew Henry Null's house. Dau. Of Capt. Null.
