Scarborough II belka@suddenlink.net December 14, 2007, 1:45 am Source: Court Of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Written: 1807 The following are abstracted from the Lincoln Co. NC Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarters Sessions: April Court 1807 - Ordered by court that Stephen Scarborough, an orphan boy being about 18 years of age, be bound (as an apprentice) to William Black until he arrives to the age of 21 years to learn the trade of a blacksmith. (Ann Dellinger's note: Just because the court refers to Stephen Scarborough as an "orphan' doesn't necessarily mean both his parents are deceased. It simply means there is no father present to provide support for him. He may have a mother living. He is being ordered apprenticed by the court because he has no one supporting him financially and he has no skill or trade to earn a living by himself.) April Court 1808 - Edward Scarborough is on jury duty. July Court 1808 - Leah Hudson vs. Edward Scarboro. Alexander McCorkle and Cornellus Clark signed as security for the defendant Edward Scarboro. (Ann Dellinger's note - No cause given for the lawsuit but it may be due to Edward Scarboro owing Leah Hudson money. Leah Hudson was a daughter of David Hudson who was deceased before 1807.) October Court 1808 - Ordered by court that Alexander McCorkle, John Crunkelton Jr., Thomas Beaty, Edward Scarborough Jr., Robert Abernathy Jr., be appointed as Patrols in Captain Black's and Reid Companies and that they take the oath's required by Law. (Ann Dellinger's note - "Patrols" were men appointed by the county court to police districts to watch for slaves absent from their plantations without written permission, break up suspicious gatherings, etc.) July Court 1816 - Ordered by Court that Charlotte Scarborough about seven years old, an illegitimate child of Sally Scarborough, be bound to Alfred M. Burton until she arrives to the age of eighteen years. Burton is to give her a good female education and $100.00 in money at the arrival of said age. I obtained permission from Mrs. Dellinger to post the material she abstracted on the Internet. I hope they may help others researching ancestors in Lincoln Co, NC.
