Charles McDowell, Captain Sigman, Lt. Van Horn. Marched to Morgantown, NC, from thence to Cane Creek in Burke County, NC where they had a slight skirmish, from Thence to Watauga. They then returned on the same route, joined by Colonels Sevier, Shelby and Campbell to Cane Creek, Burke County, NC from thence to Gilbertson in Rutherford County, NC, from thence to the Cowpens and they were joined by Colonels Cleveland and Williams and some Lincoln troops. From thence they marched across Broad River and fought the Battle of King’s Mountain the same day Ferguson was killed and the whole army take prisoners, in which battle he was wounded in the left arm by a ball, in consequence of which he returned home on the 8th October, 1780.” “Entered the service the 2nd time as a volunteer for 10 months, July 15, 1781, as will appear by certificate marked ‘A’ under Colonel Hammond, Captain Cowan, Lt. George Hammond. Marched from Lincoln County, NC to near Augusta, Georgia, marched from thence into South Carolina, joined General Greene’s army, from thence to Eutaw Springs and was in the battle in 1781. Was then marched to White Hall, South Carolina.” “In March 1782, marched to the Cherokee nation under Captain Jesse Johnson, returned to General Pickens’ in South Carolina, where he served the residue of his term and was discharged, as will appear by exhibit marked ‘B’. Interrogatory: I was born in North Carolina April 8, 1762. I have no record of my age, but have seen my age in my father’s testament. When called into service, was living in Lincoln County, NC, the name of which county has been changed several times. The names of some of the regular officers that he knew: General Green, Colonel Washington, Colonel Lee. Did you ever receive a discharge, and if so, by whom? General commanded at Eutaw, colonel Washington, Colonel Lee. Col Washington was taken prisoner at Eutaw. The discharge is to this declaration, exhibited.” The names of men who can testify to his good character, Michael Cline, John Anthony. Lincoln County, NC, November 9, 1822, John Wilfong: “Who on his oath declares that he is the same identical John Wilfong who served as a private in the company commanded by Captain John Sigman, in the regiment commanded by Colonel McDowell of the County of Burke and said state aforesaid, in the militia in the Revolutionary War, and that he was wounded in the left arm while in service at the Battle of King’s Mountain, and that in consequence of said wound, was placed on the pension list of North Carolina [in 1808], and since transferred to the pension list of the United States at the rate of two dollars per month, and further states on his oath that he never received a certificate for the said pension from the State of North Carolina or from the United States; but states that he, for some time since ___ ____ his pension form proper authority from the state of North Carolina and the United States, for the North Carolina agency at Fayetteville, and that he was the same person that was examined by James B____ and William Johnson, practicing physicians on the 22nd day of October, 1822, and that he now lives in the County of Lincoln aforesaid, where he has resided for many years, and that he is the same person that he represents himself to be,” sworn to 9th day of November, 1822. From a letter dated July 27, 1937 to a descendant, Mrs. DeWitt Plyler of Lancaster, South Carolina, the war department wrote in part: “While a resident of Lincoln county, NC, he volunteered in August or September 1780, served as a private in Captain Sigman’s company, Colonel Charles McDowell’s North Carolina regiment, was engaged in a skirmish at Cane Creek, and in the Battle at King’s Mountain where he was wounded in the left arm by a ball and returned home October 8, 1780.” “He enlisted July 15,1781, served in Captain Cowan’s company, Colonel Samuel South Carolina regiment, was engaged in the Battle at Eutaw Springs, and in March 1782, went in Captain Jesse Johnson’s company to the Cherokee nation, and was discharged May 31, 1783. He was pension September 4, 1808 on account of disability resulting from said wound. He died June 8, 1838, place not stated.
