   A RELIC OF OLDEN TIME -- The following was found among the papers of an old 
gentleman of this County, lately deceased (says the Lincolnton Republican) and 
has been handed to us for publication. It is the form of a Marriage License in 
the days of GOV. MARTIN, when North Carolina was yet a British Province and a 
large purpose of the West was under the denomination of "Rowan County, N. C.
                HIS EXCELLENCY
            JOSIAH MARTIN, ESQUIRE
           HIS MAJESTY'S CAPTAIN GENERAL AND GOVERNOR IN CHIEF,
           IN AND OVER THE SAID  PROVINCE

   SEAL
     
   To any orthodox Minister of the Church of England, or for want of any 
regular -- Minister of the dissenting Presbyterian Clergy, or lawful 
magistrate within the area, Greeting,
   By Virtue of the Power and Authority to me given, as Commander-in-Chief, in 
and for this Province (Certification having been made) to be by ADLER OSBORN, 
Clerk of Rowan County Court, that the Bond on by Law required has been taken 
and filed by hhim in his Office, I hereby Allow, Admit and License you or say 
you to Celebrate and Solemnize the Rite of Matrimony between ANTHONY HOGLMAN 
and ELIZABETH GINGERY to join them together, as Man and wife in Holy Matrimony.
   GIVEN under my Hand and Seat, at New Berne, this 11th day of July, in the 
year 1774 and in the XVIth Year of His Majesty's Reign.
